Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the sequel?

There are several aspects of the newest Trek film I really enjoy. I feel the actors were well cast, the film has a crisp look to it that I feel makes it feel fresh while recalling classic Trek. I also love the music of the film.

I just feel it had too much action!

That was one of my complaints of the TNG films, when the series focused on interesting stories that were able to engage ones mind. The films devolved into action fests that had only the tinge of story (OK OK, that's an exaggeration, but not much of one). The new Trek is guilty of this too, but it still manages to tell an engaging story (I know I know, that's a subjective statement, but it was engaging for me).

But at the end of the day the film didn't really leave me satisfied in the way the TOS films did.

To put this in the simplest of terms. TMP is like a feast for my mind, and Trek 09 is fast food for my mind. While Trek 09 does leave me with a good feeling...ultimately I feel hollow later on.

If TMP is the feast and ST is the fast food... then, at the end, TMP leaves me passed out on the sofa and ST makes me wish for more.

I'm wondering. Are you guys disagreeing with him and want even more 'splosions and mindless action in the next movie, or are you just smartassing around on that one comment about TMP?

Considering the DVD says "Action Movie of the Year!" across the back, I think more of the same would be expected of the sequel.

^^ Except bigger. It being the sequel and all

I wouldn't count on them dialing it back too much. The whole idea of the reboot is to make Star Trek more kinetic, action packed, and interesting to a much larger audience than it used to have.

Not just simply the action, but the glorification of violence is what bothered me. There was a lot of killing with a kind of glee by the "heroes" that I found contrary to what (to me at least) Star Trek is and should be about. Contrast it with SFS where Kirk keeps trying to save Kruge's life up until the point that the Klingon's intransgience gets to be more than Kirk can stand (amusing side note, "Time to boot stomp this Klingon" has become the short hand reference between my wife and I when one of us has tried to be nice to someone who just keeps being a dick).

Yes.

Well, Kirk does extend his hand to Nero at the end and gets it swatted away. I didn't get any sense of glee from the characters from killing anyone, though.

I think the sequel should keep the same level of action as in '09. If it works already, why try to fix it? I'd even say they should throw in even more action and explosions in the form of more, or one lengthy, space battle/s. In XI we only got two very brief ship-to-ship fights and I was left wanting more.

In conclusion, no, I don't think they'll dial back the action as these films are supposed to be summer action flicks. I doubt the plot will be any deeper then what we got in XI, and that's not really a bad thing.

Yes, it is. I would expect the next film to be just as action-packed, because the studio is seeking success.

I hope it's more of what it is supposed to be ... a sequel. Give me another action fest. If I want something on a slower pace, I'll watch a movie on Lifetime.

Yup. There will definitely be less action in the next one. The cast will also be less attractive and the special effects will suck.

Well, as long as they include a scene where they stop the action to have Scotty explain why they've installed an additional door and removed the price scanners from the bridge consoles, I'm on board. Anything else is just lazy writing.

I will sooooooooooo boycott this film if that doesn't happen, or I can't get one of the ensigns at the hostess stand to get me a table next to Scotty's little sidekick.

I'm always complaining about too much action.. I remember sitting through one of the Matrix movies where there is a long freeway chase n' shoot scene thinking I wanted to claw my eyes out it was so boring. I was nearly asleep in one of the other Matrix's because of the endless action.

After I saw ST:XI the first time I remember telling someone that the action level was PERFECT. There was just enough for it being big screen Trek but in no way did it take over or go on too long. Just enough to keep it a bit pumped, which is what you want for Trek onscreen.

problem why other star trek movies didn't fair well at the box office was exactly because they had too little action.

exception being the first contact which was full of action and movie made 100 million at US box office and 150 million worldwide and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home which had really good story line, and move made 110 million at US box office...

Re: Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the seq

I wouldn't say Trek XI had too much action, but it was paced too quickly. The movie practically opens up with massive shooting and splosions and has some sort of action every 5 minutes. I'm not saying I want TMP, come on 20 minutes of V'Ger flybys and the bridge crew staring at pretty colours is fucking boring, but a leisurely pace with more than 10 but less than 20 minutes between action scenes doesn't automatically ruin a movie.
