Is it still better to buy an XP machine?

A 7-12GB service pack? If the sheer size of that monstrosity doesn't persuade you to stick with XP, then I doubt anything will. I have yet to see anything in Vista that would make me even consider migrating, so to answer the original question I'd definitely stay with XP for the foreseeable future.....

I think they are excellent for kids, they are very AV-media friendly and very secure. I bought an excellent family office package for just $99 that the kids use for their home work, and they are really crazy about photo both, iChat and other stuff.

What made your change your mind? Personally, I use a large iMac that's capable of running XP in a VM. The new version of version of Fusion, 1.1, is amazing and far superior to Parallels. Fusion allows me to work from home without having to pull out my thinkpad.

I use Vista at work and XP at home.

I was a little disapointed when we first got them. All that hype but to me it does not feel so diffrent from XP. I was not lost, it only took me a few minutes to find the things that had changed from XP to Vista.

I was expecting huge changes, people at work where bitching just like some of you about how diffrent it was and how they want to go back. Its not that diffrent. And it is NOT slower in my experiance. Of course we now have Dell Optiplex 740s with 2GB.

First thing I asked the guy who installed mine was if they where really slower than XP. He looked at me like I was an idiot. He said "they have 2 gigs of ram man." I just smiled.

I have XP at home, and I cant say Vista is a huge improvment over xp. So for the people who don't want to upgrade becouse of that, I can understand. I will not buy it for my currnat PC.

But if I get a new PC I will get Vista. Its definitly not worse and while at the moment I cant say its better its not much more expensive eather. Eventually support for XP will stop, so why stick with XP?

For me, the cost is prohibitive. I built my own PC a few years ago that I spent a grand total of $450 for everything. I'm getting ready to upgrade this one for less than that, and it will bring my system to at least modern gaming specs. So upgrading is crucial for me. That's what really made the decision.
