Is it just me, or is Star Trek going the wrong way?

Coming in late to this thread, but whenever I see people claim that new Star Trek isn't "real" Star Trek or that they are somehow "insulting" the fans, I think back to the first time I ever heard that argument being made. It was all the way back in 1979 and the insult in question was the first time the Klingons were redesigned for Star Trek the motion picture. Simply swap out the name Gene Roddenberry with Alex Kurtzman, and it could have been written by LunaticBurnout (cool name by the way) for this very thread. The fans got over it then. And in large part, the fans are getting over it now. All art has to grow and change and evolve in order to survive. Speaking just for myself, if new Star Trek had just turned out to be more of the same formulatic BermaTrek that we got for 18 years in a row, I would not be nearly as enthusiastic about it. I was getting tired of that formula long before that 18-year run expired.

I think Trek has to get better and soon or it's going to become irrelevant because the competition has gotten stronger since even when Discovery started. The new wave of Star Wars and MCU shows on Disney plus The Orville and you know what. The Mandalorian is going to inspire a lot of shows wanting to get into the space drama business because they are going to want their own version of The Mandalorian. I think fantasy is about to take a nosedive now that Game of Thrones is over and I bet good money The Lord of the Rings show doesn't catch on.

It's going to be space drama and superheroes and horror I think as the big genres for a few years now. I think with Trump gone and hopefully a end to COVID coming your going to see people feeling more relaxed and wanting more fun escapism without the need to be really political for awhile. One of the reason so much of the 90's stuff seems so fun is because it was a very relaxed time period without the stress people have been living in since really 9/11.

This should be a good thing for Trek because they got the brand name already but they got to move on soon from Kurtzman and bring in a major talent that brings instant credibility to fans. Someone like Ron Moore or Naren Shankar or Drew Goddard or Damon Lindeloff.

All that just to say what you really want is TNG, DS9, and the '90s back.

I get that you don't like Discovery (and this is something we'll have to permanently agree to disagree about)... but do Picard and especially Lower Decks not do this for you?

EDITED TO ADD: Then there's Strange New Worlds, which I'm sure will evoke the feel of TOS and the Kelvin Films at the same time. The latter of which won't remind people of the '90s, but it will remind them of the Obama Era.

I actually like Picard. Just not that last two episodes. Also I don't exactly want TNG and DS9. I want them to basically give individual creators vast control over their shows and each show is kind of it's own thing. Imagine CBS having 4 Trek shows on at the same time.

1 Seth McFarlane=A classic old school Trek that appeals to older fans.

2 Aaron Sorkin=Limited series focusing on the politics of the Federation during it's first year.

3 Sam Esmail=A show focusing on just Androids exploring space 10 thousand years in the future after the humans and all the old familiar aliens have vanished in time except for the Borg.

4 TIna Fey=A trek comedy were she creates holodeck adventures that Starfleet and other purchase. She bases most of her favorite characters off her image and sort of feels lots of pressure to measure up due to her famous parents because her mom and dad are Deanna Troi and Will Riker.

Stuff like that just as examples. It doesn't half to be stuff ole Trek but it also doesn't have a kind of sameness to it that comes from I think Kurtzman's impact on all the shows. Also seek out and land A-list creators.

Thanks for elaborating with examples and clarifying some things. Now I have a better idea of what you're talking about.

I must agree with someone who said that these spinoffs probably wouldn't have done as well at all without the shiny Star Trek logo attatched to them.

While I appreciate the fans and fascinations with have with ST, and all attempts to expand and extrapolate the ST universe, I am personally exhausted from all them! (And not just with ST, but Planet of the Apes remakes I just hated, just to name one off the top of my head.)

I think "Space 1999" would be a good project for a remake. It certainly was more based on the reality of physics and how things really move, or are caused to move and operate in the vaccuum of space. (Star Wars being the only other show which adhered to physical laws....barring the light saber lol)

Multiple Star Trek shows throughout the year isn't what I personally would've done, but -- thinking about it now -- it was the only thing they could do. Pleasing all Star Trek fans who want a new Star Trek show at the same time just isn't possible. You can't do it with one show. So they did the smart thing and each series appeals to a different segment of the fandom who's open to a new series. I love Discovery and Picard. Lower Decks is a nice series but I could take it or leave it. I'm not sure where I stand on Strange New Worlds, but I do think they should go full-on 2020s Neo-TOS. The Short Treks from 2019 as well as "If Memory Serves" (DSC) show to me they can pull it off, if they go in that direction.

I didn't know he was one it. When you do something like The Watchmen and Lost and The Leftovers you would be a fool to put him on it.

Oh, yeah. He has been considered a poor choice since the whole Khan in ID debacle, as well as his participation in changing Prometheus script, supposedly.
