Is it bad that Enterprise is my favourite Trek show (that isn't Star Trek: The Next Generation)?

Not in the slightest. At the time, and at least early on, Enterprise was almost exactly what I wanted to see in a Star Trek show: future astronauts exploring space basically because they wanted to (plus a lot of new additions to the history and universe that many saw as canon-breaking but I saw as expanding and complicating). It’s still one of my favorites.

It depends, the official Star Trek fandom guide states that you are not allowed to consider Enterprise to be among your top 3 Star Trek shows if you were born before January 1st 1985 or if you like the character of Malcolm Reed regardless of your date of birth.
There's also the T'Pol exception, If she's your favorite character you are allowed to consider the show your 3rd favorite regardless of date of birth.

If you were born on or after January 1st 1985 you are allowed to like Enterprise as much as you want unless you like Malcolm Reed as previously mentioned.
1985? Man. I'm on a board with kids!

Darn

I was born 6 months earlier and rank ENT in my top 3. I guess I'm breaking the rules.

Yeah, ever since I've begun watching Enterprise, I wound up considering it my personal favourite for having an endearing cast of characters, solid art design and visuals, interesting stories, and a perfect balancing act between being grittier than Treks past and still maintaining what makes the franchise so good: the exploration of human dilemmas and problems wrapped up in sci-fi escapism, the depiction of a better future, and the wonder of exploration. It's in my opinion, really great TV, and after doing some research I can't believe how visceral the backlash to it was at the time.
You made a good argument for why you like it and I can totally see why it's your favorite. The show has a lot of the essence of what makes Star Trek great.

So... Is it bad for me to consider it my favourite non TNG show?
It's a TNG show according to the last episode

Of course not.

Never be ashamed of what you like. Some people like chocolate. Some vanilla. Some strawberry. Some peppermint.

ENT has certainly has grown on me. I just got the complete series on blu-ray. Am on a re-watch now, thru 9 episodes. Was always a fan of S3 & S4 (sans the finale), but my perception of S1 & S2 as being much weaker.

But 9 episodes in, I don't feel that way at all. "Broken Bow" was always a quality series premiere. 'The Andorian Incident" I have always loved and I think is a classic. Those two I would have regarded as strong from memory. But the others are stronger than I remember.

"Fight or Flight" sets up Hoshi's journey well, and she does have a pount about the warp engine. And I love Archer going back. "Unexpected" is flat out hilarious, and sweet.

I thought "Terra Nova" was better than I remember. As was "Breaking the Ice." That ep did a nice job both with completing Archer's thinking/journey regarding Vulcans and T'Pol's towards humans & Trip. She starts off not eating human food and progresses to celery and then pecan pie. And Trip's reading of the letter starts them on their journey after being antagonistic early. Those whole Vulcan/Andoria/human arcs with Archer, T'Pol, & Trip are are well crafted & thought out. Even "Strange New World" fits into that context/arc well, despite being my least favorite of the first 8 episodes.

But I kind of view them as of a piece where I didn't really before. And better than I remember. Individually &, for the first time, as a collective.

"Civilization" is fun, but really part of a different part os Seadon 1. The opening salvo for Act II with everyone acting together.

It's so good to hear that Enterprise has improved with age for some viewers. :)

I came to ENT late, binge-watched the first 2 1/2 seasons. I think I benefited from seeing the character arcs and overall themes all together. Plus I was not part of the Internet fan community at that point, and I believe it helped me hugely not to be tainted by all the negativity that was being thrown at the series online. I really enjoyed those first two seasons, especially the character interaction. I initially tuned in for Bakula - and I enjoyed his interpretation of Archer very much, despite the inconsistency of the writing for him. I think I rose above that to see Archer's potential as a character, and the best of Archer was, for me, really engaging.

Archer's arc with the Vulcans in general and T'Pol in particular was laid out well for me, and he pegged the Vulcans perfectly from the get-go - they were controlling and disrespectful and conniving. Of course he resented T'Pol - she was a spy! But she earned his trust - she was going through her own arc about humans and she had that haughty VHC attitude, which she thankfully got over as she got past the propaganda and got to know them herself, and as Archer fought so fiercely to defend her and keep her on board. When she gave up everything to stay with Enterprise at the end of Season 2, it was a wonderful moment. Her friendship and partnership with Archer is a huge highlight of the show for me, beautifully developed. And the revelation in Season 4 that Soval was actually a good guy was so satisfying. I wish we had been able to see more interaction between him and Archer after that point, but seeing them choose to ally was really cool.

You all know I love the Trip/T'Pol relationship. The analogy to the rocky evolution of human/Vulcan relations, seen all at once as I saw it, was a great undercurrent to the show. Too bad it was shunted aside for the needs of Season 4's "get all the good stuff in there before we get cancelled" mindset in the writing room, but I was glad for what we got, and the close of "Terra Prime" was emotional and lovely and hopeful. (Which is one of the many reasons The Thing was such a gut-punch insult, but I digress.)

There is a lot of Trek out there, a great variety, true to IDIC. Something for everybody to love.
