Is Insurrection to blame for the end of DS9?

The thought has occurred to me (maybe I'm completely wrong) that the failure of Insurrection may have indirectly put the nails in the coffin of DS9. I know this might sound absurd, but if we go back to the time that INS came out, it was the 7th and finale season of DS9, and even though DS9's ratings were far from TNG's ratings during it's 7th season, there was good reason to believe that if INS was successful that the follow up TNG movie would at least include some DS9 characters since at that time VOY was still in the Delta Quandrant. It's all a moot point now, but I was just speculating what kind of follow up we would / could have gotten if INS was successful and the next TNG film made an effort to include characters from DS9.

And even if they had incorparated DS9 characters into the TNG movies I doubt it would have been more than Janeway like cameos.

According to Ron Moore on an IGN interview he said DS9 was brought to an end because Paramount wanted to give VOY a "chance to stand on it's own".

I suspect it had more to do with the whole 'seven seasons' thing. A nice syndication number without making the show too large (and hence too expensive) a back catalogue for potential syndication buyers. Plus, with each successive year, revenue to outgoings decreases as production costs (staff salaries, primarily) increase year on year.

I'm glad DS9 characters were not added as superfluous talking heads in any TNG movies (other than Worf who was partially a TNG character anyhow). If INS stopped that from happening, then kudos to INS for that!

Yeah, it was pretty much always the plan to end it after the seventh season. IIRC Martok's line "By this time next year, the three of us will drink bloodwine in the halls of Cardassia's Central Command." from "Tears Of The Prophets" was believed by many fans to have been a subtle hint to that fact.

No DS9 had it's 7 season run and Insurrection was just a bad movie, there's no connection between the two. Well except that tptb established that the Soma made tetracil white for the Dominion, but that's about it.

Narrowly averted, of course. By now I'm sure you know of the filmed but deleted (buried?) scene with Quark and pair of dabo girls showing up for now apparent reason.

Also, Deep Space Nine was suffering from some challenges in its efforts to build an audience. Working in room for a cameo from the show would be easy enough -- see how Voyager got its cameo in Nemesis -- but to be a focus would require the show getting a stronger impression in the popular culture.

No. The absence of DS9 characters in Nemesis can be attributed to the decreasing ratings of the series itself, but primarily because it was a TNG movie and the TNG characters were always going to be the focus of the attention. VOY probably got a cameo because it had wrapped up more recently.

I always wished instead of "Insurrection" that we could have gotten a TNG movie that had something to do with the Enterprise in the Dominion War. They could have done something epic like the Dominion capturing Earth and the Enterprise leading the charge to take it back. The movie could have ended with Enterprise playing a crucial role in winning an important battle, but if people wanted to see how the rest of the war turned out, they would have needed to tune into DS9. If that TNG movie was done well and popular, tying it in directly to DS9's ongoing plot, might have really drawn in a lot of new viewers who enjoyed the TNG movie and wanted to see how the rest of it played out. They could have even had another TNG/DS9 crossover later on in DS9. Also having the Enterprise make a cameo in the final battle of the series finale would have been fun. Ah well, it wasn't meant to be.

Wow I never thought of that before but that would have been awesome! Not very mainstream though. Also whats this about a deleted scene with Quark?
