Is Hurricane Irene Coming your Way?

Just because you don't have power doesn't mean it wasn't overhyped. Everything is overhyped, and in a way that is good. Better to be prepared for the worst than not at all.

Unfortunately, in certain places (read: Vermont), the damage was much worse than expected.

So it was a combination of overhype and underhype.

I still don't have regular internet restored. I'm slowly typing from my kindle 3g. I'm happy to have power, cable tv, and hot water back, though.

We got spared. Southern Vermont got hit instead. We did lose power nonetheless and got it back earlier today after some 28 hrs or so.

I'm not complaining. We are very lucky.

I'm feeling very lucky that my part of Virginia wasn't too bad. On the other hand, more damage from last week's earthquake is popping up.

Just got my cable/landline/internet bundle back after more than 30 hours. What the hell..? They were working fine for the entirety of the storm

A lot of my neighborhood has been w/o power, but my house is fine, thank goodness. And my ex's place, where I was staying for a few months, is still w/o power. Had a small casualty there...

I think I mentioned in another thread that we were taking care of a fish -- a mini koi -- that supposedly belonged to a friend of his. I prefer furry pets, but he was good company while I was spending so much time in bed, and I became quite attached to him and even named him. Anyway, the poor little guy didn't survive the filter's being off so long.

R.I.P. James Tiberius Koik.

Aw, poor fishy. :( (Love the name!)

I would love to have a koi pond...but the neighborhood cats would turn it into an all you can eat buffet.

My apartment's internet access still hasn't returned. Comcast support has been no help as I keep getting an automated message to call back later unless it's an 'emergency.'

Even though our cable was out, I still got crystal clear munu information for the individual channels... how does that work?? Plus a message that the channel will be 'up shortly.' Our neighbor gave us the key to her FIOS wireless so we at least had internet until Comcast finally popped on last night.

My cable modem lights up in a manner indicating an internet signal, so something is definitely being sent even though I don't have network access. My guess is that something is wrong at a central hub. I am getting comcast tv cable service, though, and my neighbors appear to be getting internet based upon the wireless signals (probably FIOS).

Yeah, my own cats are why I didn't ask to bring Tiberius (as I usually called him) home w/ me. Glad you like the name. :)

I got similar behavior after a nearby lightning strike a few months ago. As far as I could tell, the lightning strike fried the ethernet ports in both my cable modem and wireless router, while leaving the rest of both devices functional.
