Is "Firefly" overated or underated?

This thread goes much faster and more enjoyably if you skip stj's posts.

That's certainly true.

Buffy is the only Whedon show I like better than Firefly. As far as the skiffy space genre is concerned, Firefly and nuBSG are the only first-rate examples since Farscape ended.

I would have thought the most functionally expendable would be River, followed by Book. Maybe we're defining it differently.

I was talking in terms of crew. River and Book were passengers, though they carved out unique niches for themselves. I truly believe that it was Zoe, though, who actually ran the ship on a day to day basis, not Mal.

As for River, it can be argued that she was the most important character to Firefly's overall narrative. The show began with her introduction to the ship and ended (in the movie) with her resolution.

In my opinion, Firefly is his best show, followed closely by Angel. As much as I enjoyed Buffy, it was far too weak after the 3rd season, in my opinion, to be considered a great show.

Dollhouse on the other hand... way at the bottom.

YMMV. IMO Buffy got better after (the very overrated) season 3. Though season 2 is one of my favorite seasons, besides 5 and 6.

I like all of Buffy, however. Even season 1 is better than people give it credit for. I know people who only like seasons 1-3 and people who only like seasons 5-7. One SF/F guy I know thinks that the show only got good in season 5.

Angel
however turned into a mess in season 4, even though I like the season 4 finale. Season 5 rectified some things but also screwed up some other things some more (like the fridging of Fred).

Dollhouse is very underrated, IMO.

Buffy is my favorite Whedon show, but I'm not sure how I would rank the other 3, it depends on my mood.

Yes, stupid or vacuous posts are easier reading.

I forgot, Zoe's choice of Wash over Mal in War Song shows that while she is quite willing to risk Wash's imprisonment or death by following Mal, when it's not a question of risk but certain death, then she gives up Mal. This is a reasonable rebuttal but it is still insufficient.

Then there was the complex, morally shades of grey scenario that was being built with the overt struggle between the Alliance and the people they oppressed. Because the Alliance wasn't simply evil, and the people inside the Alliance generally were not Nazis and even had legitimate reasons for believing what they were doing was right...In Firefly, the "big bad" was just life and its messy complexity.

The movie wrapped up the series. The overthrow of the Alliance was the endgame. Nor was there anything gray about the Alliance, they were completely monstrous dogooders and social engineers trying to make a better society. You don't get more evil than that. In particular, the Alliance rejected violence. Mal murdered a man in the two pilots and the movie to show that violence was a necessity and that it defines a free man. Or something like that, though I suppose someone could try to fancy it up so it doesn't sound so unpleasant and silly. In any event, Mal's actions were dictated by the thematic content, not inner motives, and his triumph is the validation of the thematic content he embodies. As is the near universal adoration he justly receives.

Actually, I thought Dollhouse was damn good science fiction - I mean REAL hard science fiction - i.e. postulate a scientific development, and examine how it affects mankind, and/or how mankind deals with it. Yeah, the show got off to a rocky start while Joss caved in to the network's "make her a hooker every week" demands, but it got pretty interesting as it went along. It wasn't just another SFTV action/adventure show, it had a thoughtful premise, often thoughtfully examined.

Thank you, I have alot of affection for Doll House, and think it's a shame the early rocky start and Misogyny turned so many off from it, I think it was a fantastic series by the end and I'm grateful it got 2 seasons and enough warning of cancellation to tie it all up (Though it could've been even better if it had gotten a Season 3 to tie it all up, and not rushed S2 quite so fast)

Season 2 was great, it's just a shame that they had to wrap it up quickly and so many developments happened offscreen and we just learned about them in Epitaph Two, plus a couple of characters fell by the wayside and we didn't learn what happened to them. But considering that it got cancelled and they had to wrap it all up, they did a good job of it, I'm glad it didn't end with big unresolved plots and that it does resolve the main story.
