Is Facebook Self-Aware?

It's weird sometimes. I have been getting this influx of people that I do not remotely know adding me as their friend. Who are these people?

OK turns out she just randomly did a search for her relatives a day or two after I joined Facebook. So it's just a freaky coincidence. Unless that's just what Skynet typed while pretending to be her...

Hmmm... I don't know. :vulcan: I wonder who it could be.

And speaking of that, I get a lot of friend requests from people here. Sometimes it takes me a few days to figure out who they are though. And T'bonz shows up regularly on my "Suggestions"... at least I think it is her. She probably sees me on hers and hasn't a clue who I really am either. (Either that she does and is avoiding me, which is fine because I know I am a perky pain in the ass. :shifty:  )

Computers are good at finding non-obvious patterns in massive amounts of data and drawing conclusions from them.

It's not intelligence, though, it's just some fairly clever math.
There is an interesting book about the principles behind the kind of emergent software that allows facebook to know that I am a Slowdive fan who wants laser underarm and leg hair removal, which explains how this is done, and extrapolates the principles to biology and city development -- it's called Emergence, for obvious reasons. The author didn't very skillfully bring together the different aspects of his argument, and his thesis isn't entirely sound, but still a very interesting read.

I'm thinking it must be some sort of people trying to scam me or something with pictures of (mostly) pretty women. I mean seriously in the past 4 days I've gotten 6 requests from women who I don't have a clue who they are. No mutual friends or anything. Mostly in my home town, but one in Columbia (second one from Columbia that I've gotten recently...), one in Korea (though I have a friend stationed over there, so maybe some relation to him)... It's just getting annoying.

And I am still weirded out that Facebook has reunited me with six... yes I said six... ex-boyfriends. It is kind of creepy to be talking about dating someone and have one of them chime in. :vulcan:

It tried to suggest that I friend my ex-husband. I clicked "ignore" so quickly that Facebook's head is still spinning. (Which might explain the error messages when you try to post a comment... sorry about that. But after suggesting my ex as a friend, it had it coming. :shifty:)

Facebook insists that I'm into single white girls, single catholic girls, and attractive latinas.

...

It's eerie in its accuracy.
