Is Facebook Self-Aware?

Mr Light

So I just signed up for Facebook for the first time. Well actually my GF formed an account for me without even asking! :p Anyway it's a new experience for me.

The oddest thing is how my friends somehow instantly knew I was on Facebook. These are friends with no connection to the pre-existing friends I had listed mind you. How did they know?

And tonight was the total kicker. My younger cousin friended me! How in the world did Facebook connect the two of us? Aside from our last name being the same there is zero internet connection between us. And it's not like we're close or talk alot or anything that she would do a search for me. It must be Facebook!

What's going on here? How does Facebook know?

Has it become self-aware?

Is Judgement Day coming?

Facebook will find friends of friends of friends of friends and for some reason decide that you should know each other. Sometimes it actually works out.

I hope to the monkey that it isn't self-aware. It is going to boot me off because of all the bitching I do about my job. I am shocked I still have friends on there.

And I am still weirded out that Facebook has reunited me with six... yes I said six... ex-boyfriends. It is kind of creepy to be talking about dating someone and have one of them chime in. :vulcan:

I'm not sure, but I do know that Facebook thinks I'm gay. I always get tons of ads for Hot Local Lesbians, lesbianlove.com, Single Gay Women...

I think Facebook thinks I'm desperately horny, because I get lots of ads for drunk-looking girls with boobs hanging all over the place.

:guffaw:

The adds on there irk me sometimes. Some are just plain rude, while others are hilarious.

Facebook has been oddly glitchy lately though. Buggs me when my chat conversation gets deleted, or I can't update my status because it isn't convinient for FB at that time.

Facebook knows that I am a middle aged woman who needs to lose weight and get their eyes tested. It is the beginning of Skynet. One day it will control every aspect of our lives. Mine will be devoted to farming daffodils and buying giant green nutcrackers.

^ I'm starting to feel the same guilt at not harvesting my crops or feeding my fish as actually not going into work.

^ I have actually started to plan my crop rotation around my RL activities. The fact that I am actually referring to it as "crop rotation" is really starting to freak me out!

*sigh*

I was doing this for a while, too. I lost interest in Farmville around the time I moved (a few days pass without having the internet and suddenly it stopped being a priority), but there were definitely times when I'd be at work going, "Shit, my strawberries are going to be wilted by the time I get home!"

I just read the Farmville comment to my GF - her reply was "It sucks you in!"

Facebook often recommends people I don't actually like to be my friend on Facebook. Between that and the multiple app requests that appear on a daily basis, my most used function is becoming the ignore button.

I'm on FB under my RL name. I don't go there much (it's a story). I don't join in ANY games, farming, kidnapping, whatever. I'm better off that way.

I use to always try and harvest at night, but lost interest in my 2 farms, and also my fish. Looked at farmville and fishville for the first time in 4 days just before.

It does ... but the thing that annoyed me, was slow loading with Zygna games. Roller Coaster Kingdom for example.

I have over 50 farmville requests, that I'm yet to anything with. Meh to that game now.

With friend requests, there are people who play games I use to play, or folks from here - I don't know who they are here. And some folk who I knew in 1990, when I was at certain high school.

I'm with you on this, I got up this morning thinking I'd have a crop of ruined pumpkins, and got more than overjoyed that they'd all been fertilised and were fine :borg:. I play far too many games on there, and got quite excited this morning when I saw there was a new one called "Petville". So excited in fact it warranted funny looks from my BF. My response being "I really do need a life" :(

Computers are good at finding non-obvious patterns in massive amounts of data and drawing conclusions from them.

It's not intelligence, though, it's just some fairly clever math.

I agree w/ the poster who said his most heavily used function is "ignore."

Some of the quick friend requests we get are because those people searched for us on FB before we were members, and FB "remembers" our name or e-mail address. It's a little creepy.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who looks people up out of curiosity, not necessarily because I was close to them, and not necessarily planning to friend them.
