Is Everyone Cool with the Idea of a Recast for Star Trek XI?

I guess I'm just surprised that there hasn't been a bigger (or more vocal) resistance on the part of the fans (a class of people that usually seem highly resistant to change). It seems like most people are either on board or cautiously optimistic.
Perhaps it's a desire amongst those of us who are old enough fans to care what they do with TOS to see good Trek again, to see the franchise get the much-needed kick in the pants that we begged for all those years that it seemed like Trek would have to be pulled from Brannon and Braga's cold, dead fingers. The spin-offs grew increasingly bland and insipid; the prospect of reuniting the original cast in the their old roles has become impractical and could never be completely satisfying at this point; and the original series is 40 years old. Change is inevitable, we can only cling to the hope that it will be good.

After VGR, ENT, and NEM, there's nowhere to go but up.

Huge Fan of TOS.
Cautiously optimistic.

I guess it's kind of like going to a family reunion knowing that Uncle Jack and Aunt Suzie have been recast. I know who they are supposed to be, and everyone keeps calling them Jack and Suzie, but I know Uncle Jack and Aunt Suzie and that ain't them.

Looking forward to this movie, but hoping they can convince me of who they are.

I'm willing to give them a shot.

Great analogy.

I feel the same way when people say to the Shatner fans, "Hey, don't worry. Kirk is in the movie. He's just being played by Chris Pine instead."

Chris Pine's character may be named "Kirk," but he won't be James T. Kirk unless and until he can win us over (individually, of course).

Re: Is Everyone Cool with the Idea of a Recast for Star Trek

1st option to each question.

Without re-casting TOS is dead for sure, with recasting new story possibility's exist. Imo.

Re: Is Everyone Cool with the Idea of a Recast for Star Trek

As an Original (NBC broadcast days) TOS fan, I am actually looking forward to the recasting--it seems to me that Trek's keeper (Berman) became creatively bankrupt beginning in the late 90's and flogged the horse to death....Ent had such potential and became a plotline recycling center..and the less mentioned of Voyager the better...the "Time Travel" plot rumors have me worried, but I'll wait until I see the finished product in '08 before I pass judgement..

Some small leakage of the sets, costumes, and what the Big E looks like would be helpful in creating excitement...

Re: Is Everyone Cool with the Idea of a Recast for Star Trek

There was a time that I would have been strongly against recasting of TOS. When TNG became successful I became hopeful that the idea of a Trek reboot/recast was dead (at least in my lifetime) since they could alway use the TNG style formula of the Star Trek premise with new characters. But now they can recast/reboot/remake, I am OK with it.

Re: Is Everyone Cool with the Idea of a Recast for Star Trek

I'm fine with the recasting. That's the only way that TOS can be expected to continue, assuming that the use of Beowulf-style CGI is not acceptable.

No objections over who has been cast either. As I had hoped, it's mostly unknowns. I would like liked to see Gary Sinese as McCoy, but that's not a deal-breaker.

Cheers

Alex

Yeah, that's the part, I think, that keeps me hopeful.

Same here. Star Trek has always been about more than the actors, the props or the pseudo-technology. It's all about the story being told. If that's good then nothing else matters.

Re: Is Everyone Cool with the Idea of a Recast for Star Trek

I'm not the biggest TOS fan, but I am still pissed about the miscasting of Karl Urban.

Re: Is Everyone Cool with the Idea of a Recast for Star Trek

Huge fan, not happy but willing to see this thing play out. I reserve the right to say: I knew I'd hate it!

I'm not pissed per se, but some of the casting -- like Urban -- strikes me as very off.

I wonder if the non-fans out there see Trek 11 as a remake along the lines of Bewitched, The Dukes of Hazzard, etc. -- an old TV show remade as a modern film -- and that's why the general populace seems better able to wrap their heads around this film than all the previous ones.

Re: Is Everyone Cool with the Idea of a Recast for Star Trek

I really don't think this film has even registered on the general populace yet. It's just geek-fodder at this point. I'm sure the advertising, when eventually released, will attempt to link it more with TOS nostalgia than with the ongoing (or no longer ongoing) Trekiverse as we know it.

However, the words "along the lines of Bewitched" trouble me deeply... what a piece of crap that movie was!

Re: Is Everyone Cool with the Idea of a Recast for Star Trek

Big TOS fan and am totally cool with recasting. I have been for a few years now.

Re: Is Everyone Cool with the Idea of a Recast for Star Trek

Massive Star Trek Fan. Huge.

Have accepted re-casting as the only way forward. Initial shock gave way to cautious optimism. I'll give anything a chance.

Oh, and surely the Enterprise was re-cast waaaaay before TOS-R, with The Motion Picture? That was a totally different actress. Much prettier than the original. Nicer eyes, longer legs and go faster stripes.

Or was it the same actrees with Plastic surgery?

Was there that much consternation back then? As a rerun generation trekkie (i'm in my 30's), I grew up with those two Enterprises running concurrently.

And don't forget how much Shatner's portrayal of Kirk changed over the years:

TOS - driven, risk taking, often obsessed

TMP - cool, reserved

ST:2 - combative, tricky, longing for his youth

ST:3 - loyal, back to being obsessed

ST:4 - a lark

ST:5 - on a quest

ST:6 - old, out of touch

Don't forget ST:7 - A joke

I'm cool with the recasting of the original series. Most folks (except the die hard trekkies)aren't going to care if someone besides Shatner is playing Kirk or Nimoy isn't spock etc.. It's just a movie.

The studio can only hope so.

(O/t) Clock blocker, eh? Well, I guess you blocked me for about two years ;)
Back on topic, I voted 'Huge fan' and 'Accept recasting.' Some of the new cast really intrigues me, and it'll be fun to see how this all turns out. Now if only they'd leave the original ship design alone ...

Re: Is Everyone Cool with the Idea of a Recast for Star Trek

"Huge Fan" (Watching first run since 1969)

"Accept Recast" (With no issues whatsoever).

As has been stated by others above. I love TOS (the characters and the era); so if this is what it takes to see more of those kinds of stories (and the script is good - which HASN'T been the case for the last few Star Trek films); I'm all for it.
