Is Daneil Radcliffe forever typecast as Harry Potter?

I was talking to a friend over the weekend about Radcliffe's new flick The Woman in Black and he said he just cannot see Radcliffe as anyone other than Harry Potter.

You think that Radcliffe will have as much trouble as Nimoy has had in getting people to picture him as anyone else other than Potter and Nimoy's Spock?

No - the success of The woman in black plus his roles in things like Equus and how to succeed in business without really trying suggest not.

I guess a shut-in might have a problem but normal people no.

^^ Agreed... I didn't see his stage plays, but I thought he was fine in The Woman in Black.. I think he made the right move to take on some challenging roles while he was also doing Harry Potter.. It got him some good notice and kept him from having to scramble to find decent parts, post-Potter...

I think I will have a much harder time accepting Emma in non-Hermoine roles than I will Daniel Radcliffe. Not sure why, though. Those three kids have their entire careers ahead of them, though. I hope they're successful.

I enjoyed Radcliffe in Woman in Black, but we did keep making Potter references, but that was mostly because it was a supernatural movie. I think he will be fine.

Child actors in general have a hard time transitioning into long-lasting careers (for every one that succeeds, there are countless others that fail). I think Radcliffe does have the potential for a long and diverse career. I can see him eventually being a character actor that can alternate between leading and supporting roles.

If he had done the role into his 20s it might be an issue, but I think it is easier for a child actor to reinvent themselves in adulthood than for an adult to do the same after a career-defining role.

Taking his clothes off was probably a good start on breaking it...

 Yea, but most people didn't have the opportunity to see that.

Why wasn't Nimoy ever able to break away form Spock then but you feel more confident with Radcliffe?

This reminds me of the interview where Ron Howard said he seriously thought about doing porn just to point out to audiences that he wasn't really Opie or Ritchie.

 Billy Mumy is another great example of a sci-fi/fantasy child star that had trouble being anything more than Will Robinson.

i thought Radcliffe was pretty good in The Woman in Black. i believe they are even working on a sequel to that movie so i would say it proof, at least somewhat, that he isn't typecast.
