Is CBS Pushing the Vulcan Salute on Purpose?

I thought it was a one-off thing that the cast had done in their first interviews, but the more we see them, the more we see both cast and crew of the show flashing the LLAP Vulcan hand gesture. I'm now honestly wondering if it's a deliberate move by CBS to have everyone associated with the show flash the universally-known Trek handwave around as part of the marketing strategy.

I understand it's part of Michael Burnham's central storyline, but it seems to be that some ad exec sent out a memo to everyone telling them to salute whenever they possibly could...

Almost certainly deliberate, it's everywhere. Most are even doing it with both hands which is interesting! Along with the Delta it is just visual shorthand for Star Trek, something instantly recognisable.

It is a very recognized star trek thing. Its so engrained in pop culture, behind the Delta it may be the most recognized "sign" your a trekkie,

I think people just like doing the sign. It's great visual shorthand. I was trying to think of a Star Wars equivalent and you could have people saying "May the force be with you" but there's something iconic about that hand gesture that even saying "Live long and prosper" can't replace. my opinion.

From all the press interviews and clips I've seen this cast is full of actual fans. Other shows were mainly actors who had caught an episode here or there (or not at all) these guys seem absolutely giddy about being in Trek. Some of them have even joined in facebook groups to chat with the fans directly.

It's been associated with Star Trek for a long time, almost 50 years. It's a visual short hand and culturally recognizable almost instantly as referring to "Star Trek." See "Ice Age" as a quick example.

Given Burnham's background, it might tie in to her background, but I've seen similar antics in BTS and promotional videos and interviews before, so not really that new, at least to me.

^^^ That image = mind blown.

My sci-fi geek mind cannot comprehend such a thing. I now feel like a computer that Captain Kirk made blow up by posing an infinitely-looping-logic question to it.

Here, this will make it better:

The Vulcan salute is probably the fastest way to say "Star Trek" without opening your mouth. Couple it to the facts that Burnham has a Vulcan upbringing that has greatly shaped her character and she's "related" to Spock, and that hand gesture becomes one of the greatest marketing campaigns ever!

I saw that guy when I went to vegas that year.

There was also a really well made remote control R2-D2 going around.

Well, in these videos you can hear the photographers specifically asking for the salute:
