IS CBS All Access the best format to release a new Star Trek series?

Re: IS CBS All Access the best format to release a new Star Trek serie

If it's really that bad, then just wait until the end of the season, pay the $6, watch the entire season over the course of a month, then end your subscription. Repeat as desired. Surely $6 to $12 a year isn't a problem for the vast majority of people who want to watch Star Trek.

Because poor people don't want to watch Star Trek? Cute.

My guess is these companies will try to find ways to prevent this cheat.

Cute? If $6 to $12 a year isn't doable, I doubt missing one TV show is even close to being high on your list of problems. If it is, it shouldn't be.

I don't see why they would because it's not a cheat. You're paying to use the service for a certain amount of time. I'm sure they'll gladly take your money whenever you want to subscribe.

Re: IS CBS All Access the best format to release a new Star Trek serie

I don't see why people complain about a $6/month access charge when they blow more than that going to McDonald's one time.

try telling that to a low income family. They'll get basic cable, internet and maybe netflix if they're lucky. No way they're spending $ on CBS as well... and that is my biggest issue with Trek on CBS streaming. The message of Trek has always been inclusion. Now Trek has become an upper middle class show. CBS should be trying to build a larger Trek audience. Not shrink it and make it exclusive to the affluent.

But you're argument is already showing a value judgement. CBSAA is too much, but Netflix is OK because they might have that? What about the people who can't afford Netflix? Should Star Trek be on cable instead? Well, there are people who can't afford cable, so does Star Trek need to be free OTA? CBS doesn't think Star Trek is financially viable OTA, so now there is no Star Trek.

Star Trek was not created for the public good. It was created by Gene Roddenberry to tell stories and make him money. CBS now owns Star Trek and is free to do whatever it wants with it to maximize its own revenue.

In the UK it's "poor people" who tend to spend big on entertainment, not just Sky, but Sky sports. They also are more likely to burn their money (cigarettes) and drink out.

http://brandongaille.com/22-notable-mcdonalds-customer-demographics/
39% of households with an annual income of less than $20k eat at least once per week at McDonald’s.

So $6 a year is excluding poor people?

Star Trek was not created for the public good. It was created by Gene Roddenberry to tell stories and make him money.

I believe Gene said this

"You wanna know what my vision is? ...Dollar signs! Money! I didn't write this show to usher in a new era for humanity. You think I wanna watch some people in pyjamas go to the stars? I don't even like to watch people flying. I'm a train spotter. I wrote this show so that I could retire to some tropical island filled with ...naked women. That's Gene Roddenberry. That's his vision. This other guy you keep talking about. This historical figure. I never met him. I can't imagine I ever will."

Nice turn on Zefram Cochrane. I've never seen that done before.

Re: IS CBS All Access the best format to release a new Star Trek serie

I went ahead and unsubbed from my free week. It was okay, but without Star Trek it didn't really hold my interest, especially when I already watch most of those shows on Netflix. On top of that, there are commercials on CBS All Access, and I'm not a fan of that. Still, when Star Trek premieres, I'll give it a month to see how I like it.

Re: IS CBS All Access the best format to release a new Star Trek serie

If they do the show without commercial interruptions, I might be interested in trying it out.
But I'm NOT paying to watch commercials... I'm already pissed off that they do that in the movie theaters. (which is one of the reasons I don't go very often anymore)
If they want my money they are going to have to provide a commercial free environment while I'm viewing their content...
Just like Amazon and Netflix do.

I don't care if they put ads on the site in general, but I won't pay for a premium service that also wants to get me to buy crap I'm not interested in, during the show.

Re: IS CBS All Access the best format to release a new Star Trek serie

For all the people complaining about commercials, I hear you, it is BS. I hate commercials and that alone would probably keep me from subscribing. HOWEVER how many here pay for cable? A service to deliver content that costs a crap ton and shows commercials constantly.

I think CBS All Access is a smart move on their part. I'd prefer if it was on Netflix but Netflix isn't going to be as awesome in a few years as it is now. CBS will want to move all their shows to their own platform making CBSAA a much better deal if it has ALL the Star Treks exclusively. Not to mention all the other studios that are going to move their content out of Netflix. Netflix knows this, that's why they have really ramped up making their own programs. Netflix isn't going to be the one stop shop for streaming shows.

In some ways having the show owners stream the shows is advantageous to the consumer. Netflix may decide an older program isn't worth the cost of licensing, but CBS has every reason to just throw everything they have the rights to up on streaming. It doesn't really cost them anything to add, and they can keep the shows up forever

In the future, with cable dying, instead of spending 50(or a 100) bucks a month on cable you'll just have to subscribe to each streaming service that has the shows you want. CBS+Netflix+amazon+Hulu+HBO etc etc.

.

Low income family? Seriously? I guess I have a different definition of a low income family, and they don't have basic cable, internet and netflix.

Idea of these streaming services, that have monthly payments, is that there should be new and interesting content coming up every month to convince people to keep the subscription active.

Most of the services even promote binge-watching by autoplaying the next episode automatically.

While I'm not sure if CBS All Access is the right streaming choice, not putting it on network TV is definitely a good decision IMO. You wouldn't want the show to die early or jump the shark early because of the pressures that come with instantly needing good ratings on a network. Streaming is more tailer made for trek fans of today and the younger crowd in general. The "viral" nature of the internet or streaming content is it's own asset and a better option that relying on the old and (arguably) archaic Neilson Ratings system.

Personally, I would of hoped CBS partnered with Netflix instead though. Just way more exposure to have it available on such a well establish streaming brand. But Since I'm from Canada, I still may get my wish if Netflix Canada picks up the show. Hopefully they will soon announce how the show will be distributed internationally.

Not really about the new series, but I thought here would be a good place to get an answer to this question.

Anyone have AppleTV and know if you can watch some shows free on the CBSAllAccess app without suscribing like you can on the website?

They sort of do this already...if you go to their site as a free user, you usually have access to something like the most recent 3-5 episodes of a show. But if I log in to my account I have access to the entire series.

If they did that with Star Trek, I'll take back every negative thing I've said about CBS.

I agree... even though my primary reason for wishing it was on Netflix is that I already have a Netflix subscription and I don't want to be bothered signing up for another streaming service. In other words, I am lazy.

Re: IS CBS All Access the best format to release a new Star Trek serie

No, but they're not doing what's best for Star Trek, which is still an iffy proposition on tv. They're doing what's best for CBS All Access.
Couldn't agree with you more. They're going for the gold- pressed latinum.

I don't have Apple TV, but I think I got a free show working with the Android App and Chromecast.
