Is Cary Elwes underrated?

Thespeckledkiwi

I always thought Cary Elwes as a very talented actor and a very good support actor. He did well in movies like Glory, Hot Shots!, Princess Bride, and Robin Hood: Men in Tights...But he doesn't get a lot of recognition as a talented actor.

I'd say he's just the right amount of rated.

Watch Twister. He's good. He deserves the jobs he's gotten as he's done quite well with them. But I don't see anything there that deserves "more rated-ness" than he's apparently gotten.

Along with those already mentioned, he was great in Kiss the Girls.

Never saw that. He was perfectly casted in the Princess Bride though.

He did well in X-Files.

Was always wondering why he wasn't a lead actor or even a very known support actor.

I can't think of a role he's been in where I thought he didn't do a good job.

He's a great character actor, but on the low-key side.

Don't forget the HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon, where he played the astronaut Michael Collins (who was CAPCOM during Apollo 8, and who flew the command module on Apollo 11).

...But he doesn't get a lot of recognition as a talented actor.

I would argue that this thread is proof to the contrary. Sure, he may not have been the type to grace the cover of every big deal showbiz magazine out there, but that doesn't mean that those of us who sit and enjoy his movies can't see how talented the man is.

Still think he doesn't get a lot of recognition? As you wish.... ;)

He's one of those actors who probably would have been a bigger star 40 or 50 years ago - he has that classic movie idol look to him, a bit Errol Flynn-ish.

He showed superb comic timing in the Princess Bride and I think he'd have made a better serious Robin Hood than Kevin Costner (having appeared in RH: Men in Tights, which came shortly after Costner's Prince of Thieves).

He can do comedy and drama, good, bad and indiffferent characters equally well. I'd agree, he's under-rated all right.

About the only acting he's not good at, really, is NY accents. He was on SVU awhile back (he played a mob lawyer) and his 'Noo Yawk' really faded in and out. Maybe it's a thing about UK actors not being able to speak NY well (Charles Shaughnessy later had that problem - again on SVU).

I love Cary Elwes-- he does comedy well, and his drama acting is quite good.

Except for Saw. He sucked in that one. Big time.

Dr. Lawrence Gordon: "If I don't get help... I'm going to bleed to death..."

'NUFF SAID!
What even happens to Dr Gordon? Does he escape? From seeing where that room is in Saw II, and what happens to Eric Matthews is Saw II, III and IV I assume not.

I don't think he does any American accent well. Every role I've seen him play as an American his British accent always slips in. Due too that, I don't find him to be a very good actor at all.
