Is anyone else blown away by this show's special effects?

Say what you want about this show's writing, but its production values and special effects are amazing. The effects are as good as any of the JJ Abrams Star Trek movies IMO. Every week it's as if you're watching a movie!

I still can't get over how impressive it all looks.

Not generally, no. Too much of the space ship work still has an unconvincing "digital" sheen to it. There's been exceptions – the pan around the Enterprise while the Discovery jumped to warp in the season premiere stands out as an example of excellent photorealism – but for the most part I'm just not feeling it. I'm not wowed the way I was by, say, the rebooted Battlestar Galactica back in the day.

That's precisely one of my issues with the series. I personally would rather have subpar effects with solid storytelling, than this.... It's-SO-dense-every-image-has-so-many-things-going-on approach with zero storytelling

I watch very little TV, so it seems like a huge step up from what I used to watch 10+ years ago. It's certainly visually impressive, but thankfully isn't too distracting.

To me, the storytelling is just fine. I've seen bad storytelling like in ENT seasons 1 and 2, TNG seasons 1 and 2, a lot of VOY, STID and IMO the writing in DISCO is light years better than any of those.

I'm loving the improved establishing shots we've been getting, especially in 'New Eden'. That shot of Discovery coming out of the Nebula or Ion Storm at the start of the episode was gorgeous.

Honestly, I prefer what I've seen on this show to any of the movies even, with the exception of perhaps First Contact and Wrath of Khan (Oldies but goodies that still hold up well).

I see plenty of storytelling, which suggests you can't pay attention to the production values and the storytelling at the same time.

I like the stylized version of space, with impossibly dense and vibrantly colourful nebulae.

Not crazy about the production design, but what they do, they do well in season 2.

I do miss the old transporter effect from "The Vulcan Hello", which disappeared when they switched FX teams for the old Stargate SG-1/Atlantis effect and now a golden swirly one.

I think the production design and visual effects are incredible. I always disliked the drab and repetitive designs that crept through the franchise at its most fatigued state

Not really. They are kind of a given these days, I don't think I've been blown away by special effects in a few decades. Acting, writing, great direction -- that's the stuff that blows me away.

They are better this season, but I haven't really been blown away by anything. I think the best shot so far was of Discovery entering orbit in "New Eden".

I've only watched one episode, but the FX were extremely impressive.
