Is 500 days of Summer a GI Joe prequel?

I'll admit that I flaked and had a nap through out the middle of the new GI Joe movie, which is why the plot seemed unusually tenuous and contrived, but i really didn't get how someone could go from a sweet kid to Cobra Commander?

Y'know unless he'd been churned and wrung through 500 vicious days of Summer.

500 days was a great movie. Even as I wondered if it was a Get Smart Sequel, what with all the talk of Greeting cards as code for taking over the world, but Joseph Gorden Levitz did an amazing job at acting demolished, compared to I must assume the ham fisted misdirection that gave us GI Joe.
