Irrational prejudices you hold

The other one I have is about dolls - I don't understand adults who spend their money buying dolls and putting them all around their house like it's a kid's bedroom.

Well, what about little realistic "dolls" with movie-accurate accessories and cool, in-scale spaceships from a beloved sci-fi saga?

Just, you know, hypothetically speaking...

Those are the sorts of dolls I'm thinking about - I know I'm on a Trek site but hey it's irrational.

Actually now I think about it, in real life, I don't like geeks much at all.

I hate it when people talk too much. Excessive small talk really frosts my shorts. That's probably the least rational prejudice I have.

Going with the face piercings and tattoos.
Son had his ear pierced twice, in his bedroom, by a friend (you know where this is going) needless to say it went septic and he spent a week on antibiotics ~ it has thankfully put him off his ambition for a lip piercing.

Son also expressed a desire for a tat and my neighbour (tat sleeves and all) is a tattoist. So I introduced them and Neighbour said fine, show me the pic you want and I''ll quote you.

As he left I whispered 'I doubt very much if he goes ahead with it, he's only doing it to wind me up' ~ I hope!

I am a bit prejudiced about 'fake disabled'. The ones on the mobilty scooters that park outside the pub and leap off to go to the bar. Also the guy that lives in my block who does not work, has a brand new huge car and a boat, who turns up to his 'work training' on a scooter that we have never seen him need before

I'd also like to point out that my prejudice against the Boston Red Sox is ENTIRELY rational.

seriously, it's not like white hot hatred or anything. Just a normal sports rivalry - one of the oldest and best in sports, in fact. It's as much a law of logic as anything else: I'm a Yankee fan, therefore I hate the Red Sox. Simple.

Me too. I've lost count of the number of times I've had to kick people out of the special handicapped parking places at my store when they don't have permits (and are clearly not disabled). Bastards should lose their licenses.

Oh yeah, I'll also throw this in: people who obviously never make an attempt to use proper spelling and grammar when they write. I particularly see a lot of this with younger people on websites like Facebook, and it drives me crazy!

Facebook is notorious for crappy grammar. I wish I could just report every Facebook page/group that doesn't know the difference between your and you're. I kid you not, over 95% of pages make this error. I fear for my generation.

And someone I know pluralizes words by adding an apostrophe and an "s", which I see them do all the time on FB. It is oh so very hard not to judge their intelligence when they don't know first grade level English.

This probably makes me sound like a bad person, but when people speak in their own language (IE, not English) in a group of people nearby bugs the hell out of me. I think part of it is a paranoia that they're speaking about me, and also the fact that I like to be able to know what people are saying.

Why do some of you insist on carping about fish puns?

Tattoos don't really bother me, as long as they're not excessive. Piercings, on the other hand -- gah! Earrings I don't care about, but others, especially facial piercings, just look garish and ugly to me. I find it especially unfortunate if the person has an otherwise attractive face.

Smokers; now, I know there are plenty of smokers who are decent people --hell, I live with a couple of guys who fit that description-- but knowing someone smokes still makes me think less of them. I mean, they're knowingly inhaling toxic, carcinogenic substances -- where's their common sense? I just don't get it. Plus, I generally just think it's a disgusting habit.

Oh, and since a few people have brought it up, I don't trust animals either. Sure, some can be trained, but ultimately, they don't really have a sense of right or wrong. They're relying on instinct over intelligence, and that makes me reluctant to have one as a pet. Plus, many are just bothersome and demanding creatures that are constant irritations. To be completely frank, I only like animals when they're crispy and in my stomach.

They don't shoot each other because they feel they've been dissed, they don't sell drugs or drive under the influence, and they don't start wars.

All prejudices are irrational. To extrapolate from a few observed cases to a whole group just is not logical.

No, not all prejudices are irrational. A prejudice is a kind of generalization, and we make generalizations all the time. In fact, we couldn't function without them.

I can understand the hobby of collecting dolls that have historic or cultural interest. But to me, a grown woman whose bedroom is filled with dolls or stuffed toy animals is someone with serious issues. Especially if she insists on introducing every one of them to you by name.

As for real animals, I'm pretty cool with all of them. Except Chihuahuas. I fucking hate the little bastards. They're not even dogs; they're ugly rat-faced monsters that bark incessantly. And LOUDLY. There's no such thing as a well-behaved Chihuahua.
