iPod Shuffle Syncing

We have over 3 gigs of music on the computer. I would like my step-son to transfer his songs to his thumbdrive and delete them from the computer. He says he cannot do that because the next time he syncs his iPod Shuffle, it will delete the songs from there as well.

Is there a way to delete or transfer the music to a thumbdrive and NOT delete them from his iPod Shuffle the next time he syncs?

You could set iTunes for manual syncing only, but in principal what your step-son is saying is correct.

If your computer is A and the iPod is B, then when your step-son syncs via iTunes, anything that is on B but not on A is deleted.

This is one reason I use MediaMonkey to sync my iPod.

Could he set Itunes to use the thumbdrive as the library and then just make sure that it's plugged in when he comes to sync his ipod?

^ Actually, yes it is. Current free space is 565 mb. Total space 38.2 gig.

Yes, I should upgrade and get more storage space. Until then, however...

I am intrigued by the concept of redirecting iTunes to look at the thumbdrive and sync from there.
