iPod/iTunes/Windows Installer/ troubles/issues slash/slash

As you might have guessed, I have a multifaceted problem.

I recently purchased the iPod Touch 2nd Generation 64gig but I need iTunes to activate my iPod and to transfer music to it. Several problems with this resulted (least of all the fact that I hate iTunes and the fact that I have to use it in order to transfer music from my PC to my iPod). For those who don’t know, I’m in the Navy and I’m currently underway, which means I don’t have access to Wi-Fi for my laptop. Instead, my only internet access is with the ship’s computers. This means in order to install my iTunes onto my laptop, I have to download the installer from one of the ship’s computer, burn it onto a disc, and then install it on my laptop. The first time I did this, I used the 32-bit installer and it didn’t install properly. I discovered that I needed the 64-bit installer for Vista and I subsequently went through the same process. However, iTunes still didn’t install properly. From this point, my issues with iTunes were derailed a bit because my computer insisted on booting into Safe Mode after I tried to install iTunes the second time. Long story short, after several weeks, I discovered for whatever reason, a setting in administrative tools was activated which enforced my computer to start in Safe Mode. Anyways, getting back to iTunes, I tried installing it again but it still didn’t work. Instead, I got an error message that said (roughly) “Installation wasn’t completed either because you are running your computer in Safe Mode or Windows Installer isn’t properly installed.”

I either want to:

1) Find software that will allow me to transfer my music to my iPod without using iTunes

OR

2) Figure out why iTunes won’t install. Is there any issue going on with Windows Installer I need to fix, and if so, how do I fix it?

I would prefer option 1) (although figuring out if there’s an issue with Windows Installer is important), but if I have to, I’ll deal with iTunes.

Are you using Vista? My suspicion is that your problem is in there somewhere. Although I'm sure that others have had some difficulty with iTunes I've never heard of this kind of issue.

Could you have the option of installing Windows 7 and get rid of Vista?

And I'm not sure you can use anything but iTunes to get music onto your iPod, but I could be mistaken.

Thank you for the links. I tried searching "transferring music from an iPod to a PC" but to no avail. I guess that was too complicated. :p

The best information I found thus far is that apparently WinAmp (my music player of choice) can transfer the music. I'll be trying that tonight.

Looking further into the situation, it looks like WinAmp isn't a viable option because I have a Touch. There's a plug-in that supports all iPods except iPhones and Touches.

^^ Your question has been informative for me as well because I've long assumed that iTunes was needed to load an iPod. Now I know that's not true and that there are alternatives.

That said I'm presently quite happy with my iTunes and iPod Nano.

I just googled "loading music onto an ipod without itunes" and there were several links that looked promising, but I don't want to spam you with them here especially if you've tried them already. Try googling that phrase in particular and see if you've tried all those links.

I'm wondering what happens if you just drag and drop files, using it like storage device? Would they not play on your iPod?

You can indeed use an iPod like a data storage device, but I suspect that you can't actually play the songs when stored that way.

I've tried the "drag and drop" method but no dice. Nothing results from it.

*sigh*

I guess I'll keep on Googling until I get to some Wi-Fi and try installing iTunes with an internet connection.

Sorry to bring this up, but I was doing a search, and this thread seemed like an appropriate place to ask my question.

I just bought an Ipod Nano 5th Generation which works, but doesn't update the play count on Itunes when it syncs. I've been looking around the internet to see if there is a solution to this problem and it seems like it's a known bug with the current software. Thing is it was updating the play counts earlier in the day just fine. I was just wondering if anyone else was having this problem. I guess I can live without the whole play count and last played bars (Since the thing works fine and I bought it through amazon) but I was wondering if anyone had this same problem.
