iPhone 7. Opinions?

Bad timing for Samsung to have to put out a massive recall for exploding batteries in phones? Probably...

That was only for the larger Note series, and even then one battery manufacturer that didn't meet the standards needed.

But yeah, bad timing.

Well I'm a bit perturbed, my shipping date for my iPhone 7 Plus went from September 16th to the 28th. I'm going to go to the Verizon store and find out what happened.

Picked up the wifes Rose Gold iPhone 7 today. My iPhone 7 Plus is still scheduled for the 28th.

I think it's hilarious they said it took "courage" to remove the headphone jack.

In reality, they just wanted to free up space inside the phone because hardware design is hard.
In reality, it's more like Apple didn't design the 3.5mm headphone jack, so they don't want it on their phones. They can't make money licencing the rights to build accessories using that port. They don't want people doing anything with their phones that they haven't sanctioned/made money from. It's not just headphones, it's any other accessories that use the headphone jack to connect - payment processing dongles, for example

It's a little more sinister than 'saving space'.

I despise Apple as much as anybody but this isn't really true of 2016 Apple. They didn't design Bluetooth... but they aren't dropping support for it. Macbooks still have USB ports.

Apple is more than happy to adopt standard hardware and protocols if they are good enough for Apple's purposes.

It would be better to say that they've moved on to considering the 3.5mm jack obsolete, the same way they believed floppy disks were obsolete when they dropped floppy drives from the iMac. It's Apple's way of using their market power to phase out technologies they no longer consider useful.

Yes, but they way they've implemented Bluetooth on their phones since day one has been very limiting - handsfree/speaker devices only, no data transfer or other such connections allowed. Pick up almost any other Bluetooth enabled phone (even cheap £20 Samsungs or Alcatels) and they can transfer contacts, photos and other files by bluetooth - a handy feature to have. Apple locked that out from the very first iphone.

Yes, Apple use USB these days - grudgingly. I remember back in the early 2000s they were pushing their own Firewire as their connection method of choice, the early iPods were Firewire-only, but ultimately in that instance USB was too ubiquitous and they lost that particular 'format war' and had to go with the flow. I may be wrong on this but don't modern Macbooks only feature one USB port (USB-C at that)? I'm sure I read when the last lot of Macbooks were released there being a big hoo-ha about people having to use USB hubs to connect multiple devices.

Twitter was hilarious just after the iPhone 7 announcement, hundreds of people moaning about the removal of the headphone jack, yet not even considering buying a different phone. It's remarkable the brand loyalty they have, I'll give them that.

The lack of options is a big part of why I don't buy Apple products, so you'll get no argument from me on that.

But Apple keeps making these decisions because customers keep buying their products. If they got punished for their consumer-hostile behavior, they might backtrack. But they don't, so they won't.

Received an email that my iPhone 7 Plus was shipped on Sunday. So hopefully I will have it by Tuesday.
Looking forward to your comments on it - after watching a few breakdown videos, one apparent feature is that Apple has strengthened the waterproofing on the iPhone 7 - which a welcome development.

real report is that they did this a year or two ago, but just really weren't advertising it. People are happier if they think it isn't waterproof and then it survives water rather than if they think it's waterproof, abuse it, and it doesn't hold up.

Removing the home button added better waterproofing levels, plus Samsung had been advertising it for a while now, so they finally came out with saying it.

Friend at work got the 7 the other day, and checked it out. Meh. I mean, it's alright, but at first poke, not really any different than the iPhone 6 I've already got. Slightly better camera (which was already fine for what I do), changes to the home button, about it. It was new, so noticeably faster at times, but really about it. Just don't get the push to get this one, it's a rehash that didn't add much.

I've heard and read various analyst's commentary that refers to the 7 as a "market tester" a way to determine the depth and breadth of iFanatics devotion to the iPhone. In addition, the standard finance agreement is two years long, so by time folks get around to paying off their last phone its scratched and slow, full of junk and without any interesting "new" features - so time to introduce an upgrade.

which is why they usually make changes or improvements to push people off of the fence. I agree that this time, they decided to see if they could get away without making the changes...

Or they had more sweeping plans, but things fell out and they needed another year, so again, this year was a placeholder and they figured they could do well enough to tread water off of the sheep.

Rumor is that iPhone 8 next year will be the bigger change, so i'll hold out. My phone works well enough. Did the same thing with my first phones; had a 3GS, and didn't upgrade to the 4S at the end of the 2 year cycle, was waiting for LTE to be the big driver. So when the 5 actually brought an improvement, bought in.

Can't even show off status with the 7; it doesn't look any different than the 6 or 6S. Aside from colors, at least, and those are usually buried behind a case for me anyway...
