iPhone 4 heading to Verizon

The iPhone 4 will be available on Verizon starting February 10th. Current Verizon customers can pre-order it starting February 3rd. It is a the CDMA version and not LTE, so you cannot talk and use the internet at the same time but it will offer the iPhone being a mobile hotspot for up to 5 devices.

I currently own the iPhone4 on ATT, so my contract wont be up till June 2012. Which is good for me, while I love the mobile Hotspot being offered by Verizon, its not enough for me to pay to change networks. Especially since you can't talk and use the internet at the same time. However once my contract is up, I will most likely switch. I have Verizon FIOS at home and would love to make everything one.
 
Thank god. AT&T in San Francisco is HORRENDOUS. My contract runs through this year though so I will wait for iPhone 5. Besides it will be instructive to see how well Verizon's network holds up with the influx of iPhone users.

I just got my first droid phone through the Big V, so I'll wait until it's time to renew before I consider switching over.. Add to that, I already have an Ipod Touch, so I don't really see a need for another at this juncture.
 
Anyone who gets an iPhone4 on Verizon is an idiot. It has no LTE, is the exact same as a phone released last year and will either be replaced by the iPhone5 this summer or will be behind the iPhone5 that will be released on ATT.

For no new features, this is terrible timing from Apple/Verizon.
 
You can still see the visual gaps in the antenna band, unless they've coated it with something the problem is still there.

As for LTE, according to rumor Apple is going to hold off on any sort of 4G for the next product cycle... so about 18 months from now. Considering how the original iPhone was behind the times for 3G as well, this isn't really a surprise.
 
I recently got the Droid Incredible with a new 2 year contract a month ago so a little late apple/verizon. I also like the Droid so I prefer that over the IPhone, and the free apps on the Droid over the same apps you have to pay for on the Iphone is a plus as well.
 
I've still got my old iPhone 3G from AT&T. I've had the phone for over two years now and my contract expired. I could easily jump ship back to Verizon (the carrier I had for nearly a decade before I switched to AT&T in order to get the iPhone in the first place). However, I am in no hurry to switch. I'm going to wait and see how Verizon's network performs. I am also curious to see how Verizon and AT&T compete against one another to lure in customers. Perhaps there will be price wars to convince buyers to choose one company over the other. I'm also going to wait for the iPhone 5 (or whatever they end up calling it). Apple updates the phone every year in June, like clockwork. I am sure they will do it again this year. My 3G still works fine, so I am in no hurry to make a change.
 
Yeah, enjoy that phone on a slower network with the voice/data restrictions that CDMA brings with it. Plus the influx of new people and watch how fast the Verizon superiority talk lasts...

Add in the iPhone 5 talk, and you'd be buying a phone right before it gets replaced.

Doesn't make much sense to upgrade from ANYTHING right now until the 4G LTE network is rolled out and really working.

I've got a 3GS, and will be waiting until they've got one on LTE before doing anything...
 
To clarify, I didn't mean to knock the iPhone in general as it has done some great things for the market and is a cool phone in itself, just the timing is terrible.

Of course, I might be a little biased since I am an Android user, but if for some reason I ever ended up with an iPhone, I wouldn't be that put out.

I just can't see why anyone would buy an iPhone on Verizon unless they are an uneducated consumer.
 
I equate the iPhone 4 on Verizon with the release of the original iPhone. Tons of people got it to use the iPhone, then when the iPhone 3G came out they paid what they had to, to upgrade to the 3G.

I think it will be similar with the iPhone 4 on Verizon. Tons will flock to get it, even thought iPhone 5 or iPhone LTE for Verizon will come out sometime before the two year contract is up. They will pony up the money to upgrade then.

Hell I went from the 3Gs to the iPhone 4 and I had to pay, because it was only a year. Their was significant upgrade to the iPhone to warrant me doing it. I owned the original iPhone, skipped the iPhone 3G, bought the iPhone 3Gs and then bought the iPhone 4. As of right now, we are planning on staying put with the iPhone 4 on ATT. The contract is up in June 2012, so thats 17 months away. There should be two iPhones released in that time. If the iPhone 5 has something like LTE on Verizon or something that you cant pass up, like Facetime. It maybe worth it to upgrade. However if its like, iPhone to iPhone 3G then no deal.

Same here - went with the Incredible on Verizon over iPhone on AT&T and couldn't be happier. :techman:

I always say that you need to find the best phone that meets your own personal needs. There's no need for it to be a fight, no need to cajole or try to explain why this phone is better or that phone is worst.

I'm very happy with the iPhone, especially the iPhone 4. If you are super happy with your phones, that is all that matters. We live in a great time, competition will breed even greater phones. Like we can really call them phones any more, more like Personal Communication Devices. Look where the smart phone has come from with the release of the original iPhone in 2007. Barely 4 years and we are in the infancy of the smart phone revolution.
 
I'm not trying to be adversarial at all, and my Friend has an Iphone. I was one of those who wanted to get the Iphone but I have a family plan on Verizon and we couldn't wait anymore. That's pretty much why I went for the Droid, and it's not worth the costs of just starting the new contract and then going for another phone.

I do have a question though. Someone up thread mentioned the whole Verizon Network and how it's able to handle the influx of users on that network. Is that something I need to worry about (And on my phone is a 3G)? I see people in this thread talking about enhancing and 4G and the strain on the network, and while I'm perfectly happy with the phone I have, I have to wonder if it's something I should be thinking about or if my concerns are unfounded.

There's really no way to know, but personally I wouldn't be worried. People switching from Android phones to the iPhone will not cause any more strain on the network then they already are (if anything, from the stats I've read Android users tend to use a little more data then people with iPhones). I'm sure there will be an infux of new subscribers but unless Verizon is already close to the breaking point, which they don't seem to be, I wouldn't expect any problems.

I do find it a little amusing, though, that after iPhone users slagging off AT&T's network for years many of them are preemptively slagging off Verizon and defending AT&T in the process.

I agree, I don't think the release of the iPhone on Verizon will affect its network much. I think a majority of those who are going to get the iPhone on Verizon will be people who switch from an existing Verizon phone to the iPhone. So with their switch to the iPhone, their usage will go up but not exponentially. You will have some new customers, either from ATT or other carriers but still I think they have scaled their network and are ready for this.

Point out faults with the iPhone on Verizon like not being able to talk and use data at the same time is a fair criticism. Also that it is CDMA and not LTE as well. Also them introducing it now, with the whole world knowing that their will be a iPhone refresh in June is a little suspect. I can imagine that the Verizon iPhone may not be on the same refresh schedule as the ATT iPhone. So I think it is okay to jump in right now for the iPhone on Verizon, if you are an existing Verizon customer. But think it is unwise to jump from ATT to Verizon at this point.
 
I can't afford to upgrade right now, and it sounds like it'll be better to just wait for the iPhone 5 anyways.
 
I think, the advent of the tablets will curb the smart phone craze somewhat. Ever since I got my iPad my iPhone has seen a lot less use. All I'm doing now is email (and phone calls).

Yes, the iPhone 5 is only five month or so away, but that's more than five month, man!

Didn't help AT&T any. They've been pretty aggressively upgrading things all this time, but just hard to keep up with that kind of demand.

Verizon talking about how much more awesome they are should get a bit quieter once they get slammed with new users, all of which are using data-intensive apps. Verizon will be in a better place to weather it, as they've had a couple more years to prepare, but they're still going to take a hit. Possibly even more so, once former AT&T users switch over and see that despite having a very similar-looking phone, the old CDMA network just isn't the same. Can't do voice and data together, can't really use it a lot of places outside the US, etc.

On the plus side, this should get some people off of AT&T, so MY service should get a little better, so I'm a big fan of the announcement! :)
