iPad compulsory at school

That always sounded like way too much work.
A little more work, a lot more reward.

If you just need to do mundane stuff, a Linux machine works exactly like a Windows computer (but way more stable) or a Mac (but significantly less pricey). But if you need to run something that's a little more arcane or self-made, it's almost impossible to do it on Windows or Mac, but quite easy on Linux.

That's my experience at least. I'm sure people will disagree.

Yes, they do.
I've used Ubuntu, MacOS and Windows 7 on different machines in the past years. They all have good and bad aspects. And I haven't found any of them to be more stable then another.

Well, actually I think MacOS turned out to be the least stable. Win7 hasn't crashed a single time. Ubuntu suffered from random performance issues.

Haven't tried Windows 7. XP was pretty good, but ME and Vista soured me about the whole Windows stuff. On the other hand, never had a problem with Ubuntu, same with Fedora, Suse and Mandrake. However, most of the stuff I used doesn't even exist for Windows or Mac, so it might just be a case of familiarity for me.

That's really interesting. In my house (which is also my home office), I have systems of all the types you mentioned, and of them, only my Macs haven't needed to be rebooted within the past few months (and one of them is used as my primary work system for both print and web design). No crashes to speak of either. I wonder if your Mac might have had some kind of hardware problem -- like a bad run on some chip or another that caused your stability issue...

Windows 7 has been solid as hell for me. No (power loss related) reboots in well over 6 months.

Like what?

The way it keeps similar icons together in the taskbar, even when you've got them degrouped. I like it, it's just different. There's also that little desktop button at the lower right. Weird thing. The Explorer interface revamp also takes some getting used to, including the way searching is done now. I like that the new search is actually pretty powerful, but to get good results out of it you have to really know what you're doing. Gone are the rather explanatory search dialogs of XP.

I also turned off the fancy shmancy interface so it looks (sort of) like Windows 2000, just the way I likes it. :p Yeah, I don't even use a background wallpaper. I am a no-frills kinda guy when it comes to my operating systems. (But then why am I using Windows? Games.)

I'm with you on the no frills.

There is away to have your taskbar icons as you like them. I'm not sure how to do it though. Like you--games.

Explorer is definitely better, but I'd still say inferior to Konq/Dolphin or even Nautilus.

I normally find file explorers to be a massive impediment to getting work done, rather than a benefit. When they piss me off I just go down to the command line and script whatever it is I need to do.

While you're seeing some of it already, over time you'll find that W7 is steady as a rock. I have no great love for Windows, or any OS really, but this version is the most stable, in my opinion.

I wrote this a few years ago, so my handwriting is even worse now, but here is my handwriting, accompanied by a badass drawing of Optimus Prime playing a Gibson Explorer.
