Invent your own Star Trek Tech

Deathstars?

We have all the orbital tactical strength we need in the form of the smaller Anteres-Class to larger Alexandria-Class shipyards/drydocks & upwards to the Ournal-Class spacedocks. We also have the Typhon-Class mobile outpost / carriers.

I'm talking about a galaxyship that can haul a small fleet of shorter-range exploratory starships to other galaxies, park there, and serve as a home base while the starship fleet does the local exploring.

Think of a galaxyship like the Atlantis base in STARGATE: ATLANTIS. Ships can land in or on it, but the city itself can serve as both a home base or as an intergalactic vessel.

^ No, it would be an uber-super-huge galaxyship. Just as starships have hangar bays for suhttlecraft, so a galaxyship would have hangar bays for starships. The difference between starships and galaxyships would be in terms of magnitude. A galaxyship would still be a highly mobile space vessel in its own right, but just as a starship can park in orbit to explore a planet, so a galaxyship can park in deep space to launch starships to explore a galaxy.

As transporter tech gets more advanced, it can do more screening for imperfections, and used as much as a medical tool as transportation. Plus, as SF vessels get larger, a turbolift system gets anachronistic and inefficient. I propose "flash beaming", a way to get from one end of a 5 kilometer ship to the other without having to wait for an elevator. It would propbably be thought-activated, and using a sytem of transportation hardware that's built into the ship's structure just like air and water.

Matter conversion Drive - consumes long rods of Bismuth and converts them into energy.

ZPE reactors - Small reactors that only work in normal space, many throughout the ship, about the size of a dorm fridge. They feed the Fuel replenishment system which takes the energy created by the ZPE energy and materializes bismuth rods.

Auto Repair System - Coupled to the ZPE reactors, like a transporter / replicator, can replaced damaged sections of hull and other stuff damaged by battles, works more methodically than human based repairs, when repairing a system in normal space it uses ZPE reactors to supply the energy/matter, when working at warp they need to tap into the other power systems, limiting warp speed auto repair unless you want to burn through bismuth rods really fast.

Sentient Backup System - Uses a transporter like device to store a copy of a person's patter encoded in a small yellow crystaline block. The reason for encoding a copy this way is that no power is needed to maintain the pattern. Used to "replace" redshirts, command staff has a backup made every 3 months and backups are stored near major Auto repair systems.

There's not enough biotechnology in Star Trek. There's also not enough experimentation with transhumanistic concepts and expanding humanity directly.

I would imagine a form of bioplasmic artificial matter that would, in reality, be more what Data's outer shell was really made from. The stuff would have all kinds of uses however. Many of them would be cosmetic. People would realistically (I think) in such a future have an expanded sense of aesthetics if only by being exposed to such a wide variety of life forms. The bioplasma would essentially be an advanced form of makeup, allowing people to temporarily alter their minor anatomical details and surface in almost any way they could imagine.

This would be a bit like the advanced "disguise goo" that is sometimes used to add alien parts onto personnel when they're infiltrating, but I'd tend to imagine this stuff would be able to go on and come off easily, without requiring a doctor. It'd also be safe to leave on as long as somebody wanted, designed to integrate with the wearer's native flesh and keep it healthy.

More biotech: synthetic organic computer systems "installed" in Starfleet members to allow them to access ship systems and Starfleet devices more directly, and provide an extra layer of security. The organic interfaces would only function as long as the user was both alive and in one piece, dissuading captors from mutilating or killing crew members since without the crew native to the ship, they'd be all but helpless and unable to even open doors if the ship was in a security state, locked down.

I wonder if the Hortae of Janus VI ever joined the Federation.

They might provide some silicon-based missing links for biotech/Gomtuu style advances...

Ghost in the Shell meets Trek, bring it on!

Wingsley: That's an interesting idea. The Horta as Biotechnology Specialists. Do you mind if I use that in my fan fiction efforts? Horta in-charge of adapting Intrepid-Class bio-neural gelpacks to later vessels such as the Interceptor-Class & Titan-Class.

In addition to Horta performing experiments at Starfleet Science with the holodoctor's skull implant extracted from the "Alt-Future" Admiral Janeway from "Endgame" leading to Kajima's theories on the BUG's (bio-mechanical utility grafts) from an internet animated Trek series I've heard about. Interesting.

Not really my idea. Diane Duane used Hortae in her 1980's era novels, "My Enemy, My Ally" and "The Romulan Way". I would think that Horta involvement in the post-TNG era is long overdue.

Interestingly, the volcanic creatures of Excalbia (TOS' "The Savage Curtain") seem similar to the Horta; and the creatures of the Sheliak Corporate (TNG's "The Ensigns of Command"). So maybe silicon lifeforms, Federation or not, do occasionally occur in our galaxy.

ST:TMP already demonstrated a viable humanoid/machine neural interface technology. The film's chief graphic designer, Lee Cole, also fabricated a neural interface port for the NCC-1701 Refit's helm console to improve pilot response times, although director Robert Wise chose not to make use of it for whatever reason.

As for inventing my own Treknology, call me hopelessly unimaginative but the repeated references to the Enterprise's fuel consumption stats in TOS (The Doomsday Machine, The Deadly Years, etc.) have given me occasion to ponder a NASA STS Extended Duration Orbiter inspired pallet containing tanks for anti-matter, impulse engine reaction mass and other consumable that can be plugged into a Constitution-Class starship's shuttlebay for out-of-range-envelope exploration missions. The pallet would be jettisoned after its supplies are exhausted, and in the event an unexpected shuttle launch is required the modular assembly could be decoupled, sent into a station keeping orbit several kilometers away from the ship with onboard RCS thrusters, and then retrieved. Cosmic thoughts, gentlemen?

Completely holographic ships.

Imagine a core that is a HoloProjector/WarpCore/ShieldGenerator all in one. The ship can look however it wants, and conform to the whim of it's crew. Even the computer would be a holographic interface.

It would almost be like living inside the Doctor from Voyager.

A huge particle weapon capable of firing a beam at the oceans of a planet and breaking the water up into their constituent parts of hydrogen and oxygen in a matter of seconds and then igniting the hydrogen wiping out all life on the planet.

Hope you can breathe in space in case of power outage.

It's nice to see TGT give some form to the obvious necessity for an "extended range" platform that would, at the very least, provide the raw materials needed for the advanced systems onboard a starship reaching beyond its intended range to manufacture antimatter, water and other consumables. Whether such a pallet would need to occupy the hangar deck, or could instead take up whatever portion of the cargo holds along the keel would be necessary, is another question entirely.

I think the hatches Jefferies placed along the belly of the starship are full of modular possibilities. (Possibilities that were unfortunately mishandled in the remastered "Operation Annihilate" when 210 bigass non-replicating ultraviolet satellites were shown coming form the one hatch that looked as if it shouldn't have been a cargo hold. But I try to look at the bright side, and at least Okuda et al. were thinking along similar lines as I am.)

I'd think that on an extended range mission the hangar might be used for such autonomous and perhaps self-replicating craft to extend range and mission even further -- use the space-warping starship to get way out there, and then "seed" the area with probes and the makings of a comm network to allow the probes to relay their data back to anxious researchers.

On that note, my own Trek Tech would be a hologram that's really a hologram -- you know, light. None of this "holomatter" gibberish. :p

Santa Kirk: Already taken care-of as the "Phased Mass Holographic Masking Device" in Trek, -- see "Star Trek: Away Team" & U.S.S. Incursion.

It's used for fooling sensors of enemy vessels at extremely long range, but cannot pass routine short-range scrutiny. The Phased Mass Holographic Masking Device is not considered an advisable tactical option for long term use due to its' extremely high power consumption & the high terraquads of data it needs to temporarily disguise itself as an enemy vessel.
