intrepid-class design question

on the aft section above the port (left) torpedo launcher the a noticeable "hole" or indentation. i was wondering what purpose would require that section to be left so empty. you'd think the starfleet engineers would've thought to fill it in with something. so why is it there? or in this case, not there?

I don't know my terms, so are we talking about the big square cutout above the rear facing torpedoes?
There's an EVA hatch there, so it needs a flat area for the door to remain vertical, and probably match up to the wall inside rather than have it so steeply sloped. Most of the outside surface of Voyager (and other ships) is very steep, so all of the other hatches and doors are on flat areas, such as the edge of the hull.

ah, at any rate, using the airlock door next to the shuttle bay door as a comparason scale there still seems to be a lot of wasted space.
