Into Darkness: Why not use "real" Caitians?

For which Prime fans, though?

I suspect the overwhelming majority are like me - watched a couple of the animated episodes back in 1973 (or in whatever year they first came to it) and weren't engaged sufficiently to stay around to see the rest.
I happened to catch an episode or two when I was in 1st grade and thought it was weird that there was a cartoon version of Star Trek. But they replaced it with Robotech a month later and I basically forgot about it until my son found it on Netflix a year or two ago.

I wasn't even born yet when TAS came out.

Because too many people in the audience would have just laughed so hard at the whole scene that the little bit of dialogue carrying the plot forward would have been lost.

+1

Why? Because Kirk was open minded enough not to care there was a species difference?

It would be pushing the bounds of convention, yes, but entirely appropriate for Trek.

Star Trek fans are squeamish about showing gay people, I can't imagine the backlash Kirk in bed with two cat people would've caused.

Because ... the Caitians be telling jokes and doing a comical juggling routine in addition to appearing in the scene at all?

No, because Pine in bed with two women made up as giant cats would make most people laugh. Hell, the jokes write themselves.

No one cares what's "appropriate for Trek;" they care about audiences laughing their asses off over something visually ridiculous. Most people who buy tickets to movies don't give a rat's ass about previous continuity or "the Trek Universe."

Is this seriously a thread complaining about pussy?

Are we really scraping the absolute bottom of the fucking barrel?

Hold up, we're approaching this the wrong way, maybe they just shaved their fur off.

Maybe James Kirk likes smooth pussy, you never know.

Only the furries want to see this kind of stuff.

And Mrs. Slocombe.

Okay, let's not beat it to death. I'd have to call out the SPCA, and they always hate that.

It's worth pointing out that due to a rights issue, Caitians have been depicted as human before, in the ancient Book and Record "Passage to Moauv". One of the concepts for the twins even resembled M'Ress' humanoid appearance:

You called? :D

Seriously, though, I'm with Chemy on this one: It would have been cool, IMO, if they could have gone the full alien/Caitian route, but yeah, hot set, 5 second scene, it would have been a lot of expense for a throwaway moment.

They are a different race of Caitians. It's simple.

Just like you have hairless cats and persian cats and they are both cats, so with Caitians hair varies.

I just assumed they were Caitians...or a related species.

I'm just enough of a Trek nerd to even care about that stuff.
