Interstellar law and treaties

BohandiAnsoid

I was recently thinking about what interstellar law and treaties would look like. Especially if entities like United Planets from Galactic Civilizations game series exist. In my universe, there is probably going to be something established to prevent tragedies like the Destruction of Bohus (where humans bombarded Bohandi homeworld to ruins after Bohandi first attacked them) from occurring again.

What do you think it would look like? I guess it would not outlaw war entirely, but would put restrictions on them. What do you think about laws to prevent tragedies like the Destruction of Bohus from occurring again? What kind of treaties would exist and what would they look like? What kind of laws would exist for war in space?

Let’s talk about this.

For a universe most of us have no exposure to, it is hard to make any kind of determinations without knowing the cultures involved.

Much like each conflict on Earth has its own dynamics based on the cultures involved and each solution differs.

For me it depends if you include alien races with their own planets or just humanity.

In the latter cases i figure the only way for this to work at interstellar distances is for every colony/planet to be self governing and in a loose ( or maybe even tight) coalition with other colonies and Earth for something like mutual defence and economy. Maybe with a grace period of a couple of years or decades built in for new colonies until the financial effort of establishing a colony has been paid back to whoever expended ressources to get the colony started in the first place.

The reason is to simply avoid the mess that comes with distant people being ruled over by other people equally distant from then aka the repeat of the entire earthbound colonial system that if viewed through history is largely responsible for much of the international mess we have today.

That would be the logical and sane thing to do when people remember history and draw the right conclusions and improve.

Reality is that some asshole will not do the logical and sane thing but wants to dominate and control everything they can lay their hands on, so they will stir shit up at home and build a supporter base and if that gets large and pwerful enough they will try to go external and exert control over others, which inevitably leads to war just because some people always want to control others and increase their power.
