Internet Explorer 8 = Garbage

FF3 has been known to be a bit buggy (since it's fairly new), and supposedly a memory hog. I've got a ton of RAM on my machine at home, so that hasn't been a problem for me, but I have noticed some of the other (minor) problems.
Still a lot better and a whole lot faster than IE7, but occasionally IE is needed for something or other, so getting a properly working version of it is a good idea.
If you use FF, get add-ons like Adblock Plus and NoScript. VideoDownloader is another good one. These are available right on www.mozilla.com

What's wrong with Firefox 3? I thought it was supposed to be better than Firefox 2.

It's still got some issues. Like occasionally not doing anything when you click on links until you open a new window. And crashing consistently every time you try to visit peterdavid.net. (EDIT: Wow, that happens under IE too. Must be something *really* strange on that site.)

I'm not having any trouble with peterdavid.net. Maybe its something local?

No, don't use the first one. Anthony will get angry. Or at least put in an exception for TrekBBS if that addon has that option (I don't use it).

Right, you can always "disable on page" if need be with ABP. NoScript has a similar thing where you can "allow" given pages, either temporarily or permanently, especially if there's something Java related that needs to run.

All I know is I haven't seen those fracking dancing cowboys for over a year because you can "adblock image" too.

Somehow I doubt IE8 is the problem. I've been using it since Beta 2 came out and I'm still waiting for my first crash...

And those calling IE8 'trash' are a bit OTT in my opinion.

I just tried accessing that peterdavid.net website and it worked fine for me, I'm using Firefox 3.0.4 with the NoScript extension.

There was something on the website that NoScript auto-blocked, as I've not visited the website before and so hadn't marked it as "safe" in my browser settings so I don't know what it was.

Perhaps it's whatever that script is that's causing your browser to crash?

Only problem I had prior to going to IE 8 from IE 7 is that I couldn't view some videos on CNN. Since, I get these crashes all the damn time. Now, it seems also that I cannot go back to IE7. Deleting IE8, reinstalling IE7 and going to a restore point previous to downloading IE8 resulted in an endlessly blank screen when I tried to bring up the browser. Never even got an error message.

I'm using Firefox now. I can get IE8 to work but it continues to crash frequently so I doubt I'll use it much.

Maybe I'm "OTT" but that's been my experience. If you have any better solutions than name-calling, I'm more than willing to listen. That's why I started this thread, you see. To try to solve the problem.

Sorry for saying you where OTT, I'm just really protective of Internet Explorer for reasons that cannot be explained.

Anyway, here are my suggestions...

If you can get back to the point you started at (with IE8 working) you could try uninstalling it by going into the "C:\WINDOWS\ie8\spuninst" folder and running "spuninst.exe". This is supposed uninstall IE8 and leave you with your previous version of Internet Explorer (aka IE7) and may work better than the Add/Remove program method.

If this doesn't work I suppose you could try reinstalling IE7 again and see if it gives you the option to repair the software instead. Or you could look for IE7 in Add/Remove programs and click the change/remove button to see if you can repair it that way. If this STILL doesn't work I suppose you could try removing IE7 (if you're using XP) and then reinstalling it. If after removing IE7 and IE6 doesn't work either you could try reinstalling SP2 which includes IE6 (you may need to remove SP3 if you have it installed I'm not sure).

If none of that works I suppose you could do a repair installation of Windows but that’s a really desperate option and you'll need the Windows CD anyway.

Doesn't appear to happen on FF3 at home, guess that's not to blame. Maybe it's something specific to XP64.

It seems considerably simpler to just install another browser and forget about IE altogether.

Looking at video was one of the only things I needed IE7 for. With all conceivable add-ons for FF3, I could not get this video (redlightviolations.com :klingon:), but I was able to view it with IE7.
But this is the only situation I would use it for. Again, it's a performance issue with me, plus FFx has tons of add-ons and skins to choose from, depending on your usage.
Plus, isn't IE an extension of the OS "browser" anyway? It might be important to have it working properly.

That's true but Internet Explorer is tied in with Windows Explorer and it might be causing other problems that Zachary Smith doesn't know about yet. But even if it's not it's good to have everything working, at least that's what I think.

I think it should all work properly too. Maybe someone should let Microsoft know.
