Internet Connection and Pen drives

Wonder if anyone has idea what might be happening here but whenever I'm connected to the internet and plug a pen drive in and then unplug it I always find that the connection drops and have to reconnect. As I only have four USB ports I use the back two for my printers and one of the two on the front for the modem. I alternate the spare front one for an external hard drive and a pen drive. I did try putting my modem into one of the back ports but it didn't help so does anyone any ideas why it might happen?

Sounds to me as if you could do with buying a powered USB hub and plugging your modem into that (I'd guess your modem's one of those nasty little jobs that draws it's current from the port rather than having it's own independent mains supply). Not all motherboard-mounted USB controllers can supply enough current to power a range of devices at one go, so if you're using multiple devices at once (and USB sticks need power from the port to be read & written to) the voltage drop can be big enough to cause your modem to reboot itself and thus drop your connection . You should be able to pick up an external 4-port hub with it's own power supply fairly cheaply.
