Interesting article on the renewal of House AND Bones

As most now know House is in a bit of a mess with NBC Universal and Fox fighting over an agreement with who will fund the show and fees. Most seemed to think it was only with money, but this article points a few things out....

1. Bones is also in the same mess, which is the first I'm really hearing about this.

2. Universal wants both shows for two season pick ups. How about getting House a final season 8, everyone is already talking about ditching ship, we don't need House season 9 with the only characters left are Tuab and Chuddy.

3. This explains why Fringe got renewed.

So let me get this right...

20th Century Fox TV is having trouble with FOX  its like The Simpsons being sued by FOX news all over again. If I was FOX I would gladly pickup Bones for 2 more seasons and then END it but House has only 1 more season left in it. I very much doubt Hugh would do a 9th as its been reported that he has suffered family issues in the past do to this work commitment in America.

I can see House going to NBC for one final season and even on the peacock network I think the show would still retain 80%+ of its current audience especially if announced as the last season.

Both shows WILL return because some money is better than NO money.

It's odd, but I still like watching both shows even though they've both turned into pointless self-parodies.

If Universal is pushing for two more years on House, they must be confident that they'll sign Hugh Laurie to another contract.

This may be a good move for the series; since the supporting cast has contracts that are up at the end of this year, Universal could simply cut loose some of the characters and bring on a new supporting cast for at least two years. (Also, it would be cheaper.) At this point, I think I'd rather see the series retooled with a new supporting cast for two more years than to see another year of Foreman and Chase.

^

Even when they had a story logic reason to retool the supportin' cast, two characters wound up comin' back.

I'm watchin' House more than I used to, so I could live without it. Guess I could do without Bones, too, but I'd rather see it continue.

As long as they keep Wilson and Cuddy the show will be watchable. Hell... I've even grown to like Taub... it only took me almost 4 seasons.

^ Wilson will not be a main charter next season. House is dying and Universal needs to see that.

Bones is running in circles but still has a couple seasons left.

Nothing is set in stone with that yet. And House still gets great ratings compared to a lot of other shows.

They had a story reason, but they didn't have a financial reason; the actors were under contract.

At this point, they have a financial reason to retool the cast, especially if they get a two-season renewal. The actors (all save Laurie) aren't under contract, and they would be more expensive to resign.

I'm actually surprised Laurie's under contract for additional seasons. A few years back, I seem to recall reading that he didn't like splitting time between Los Angeles and England and wanted out. Guess not.

^Or he may have signed a "as long as it runs" contract before he realized how long that would actually be.

I used to enjoy both shows but I think both have run their courses. Whether or not Fox brings them back I doubt I'll be watching.

He's only for the 8th, universal just wants to pull a Sienfeld and try the show without it's star.

Honestly, I admit that House's quality has slipped quite a bit over the last season or two but if Hugh Laurie is in it I'll watch it, I'd argue that no one else really "needs" to be in it. Other friends, fellows and bosses can be brought in.

If Laurie is willing to do more seasons they should to them and while House's numbers are lower than they were, most shows across the board are more or less down and House still gets respectable numbers.
