Insurrection was the best NG movie.

I agree. This is the best Next Gen film. It's deep, has good character moments, and has a pace that is not too fast (FC) nor too slow. This is my second favorite Trek film, the first being The undiscovered country.

Hmmm...when I first saw this in theatres (I was 17) I thought it was pretty disappointing. As I watch it now, it's still my least favorite of all the Trek films, but I like it more than I did back then.

I think the story is pretty good, but the goofiness hurts it so much. I mean, people say Trek V's humor was bad, but this? The musical number during the shuttle craft scene was just PAINFUL.

But that was the problem with the TNG films humor: it never really worked, IMO. It was just so goofy and distracting, and Insurrection really upped the humor content.

But hey, I'm a die-hard Trek fan, so I can still find a lot of good stuff in the film. As I said, my least favorite, but still a worthy addition in the franchise.

How so? Picard was trying to tie up Data's engrams with a recent program run to distract him from the situation at hand- why is that "painful" in any way?:shifty:

Because I thought it was just really stupid. As I said, its my opinion.

It was so over-the-top and so goofy...just didn't work at all. It takes all my strength not to simply shut the movie off during that scene. Thankfully, things improve after it...

I really liked Insurrection. It's not the best of the Star Trek movies, but it's also not the worst either. In fact, I consider it one of the better odd number films in the series.

It's certainly the most Roddenberry-esque Trek movie.

Curious, why? Is it because they sing, or because of what they sing?

It's because they sing. Even if it had been a different song, it wouldn't have mattered for me. I mean, a goofy musical number in a Trek movie took me right out of it.

I always assumed that most Trek fans (and movie fans in general) thought it was a dumb scene.

People say that Scotty hitting his head on the bulkhead in Trek V was a dumb scene, so I just assumed the general consensus that this was a REALLY dumb scene.

Am I the only one that didn't like it?

It is one of the better odd numbered films. Right after I, III, V, VII and XI. :guffaw:

I don't think that's entirely fair. I'd watch it 10 times before I'd watch I.

I know I'm bumping this thread. Just made some interesting observations about Insurrection.

When Data released the water from the dam, you can actually see on the other side of the lake that the waterline indeed was lower than before.

And when they enter the holoship, the little boat is just below the door, but after they talked and fought the Son'a, it's much, much lower so they have to jump into the water. Why? Because the water is still released from the dam. I thought that was a nice detail.

And in the end, when Picard is about to destroy the collector, there's this line of dialogue:

RIKER: Stand by, Captain. We're right around the corner.
PICARD: Sorry. Time's up.

Picard didn't expect the Enterprise would make it and that he would die destroying the collector.

Oh for Pete's sake, there's already an Insurrection thread on the go. Did you really have to revive this?

Insurrection is not only not the best TNG movie, it is in fact the worst TNG movie.

Insurrection is so dull that it's the only TNG movie I have never watched more than once. At least Generations and even - gulp - that godawful Nemesis, had some moments that made them at least somewhat worthwhile.

But Insurrection is just plain bad. Not Spock's Brain bad. Or even Sub Rosa bad. But Ferengi Love songs bad.

And First Contact doesn't even belong in this discussion, since it's a great movie with tight character moments, good drama, solid action and humor. Just the thought of trying to equate Insurrection with FC is absurd.

Talk about a painful trek movie. Star Trek TMP felt more like a bad episode of Next Gen than a TOS movie. That was the last of the original Star Trek movies I actually watched, and almost made me never want to watch Star Trek again.

Insurrection while being no where near the "greatest" movie, is still worlds beyond that horror.

I imagine Roddenberry would have had more diversity in the Ba'ku, than what we saw in the film.

You're not the only one.

The singing was highly cheesy...;)

Thank you to those who posted these refreshingly unusual (for this forum) opinions. All the people calling the first Star Trek movie one of the best and ripping apart "Star Trek: First Contact" have been horrifying me since I first joined this forum. Actually, I do appreciate a few things about "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", but I I would rank it behind VIII, II, IV, and VI. Joel, I hope you're not laughing at the "Star Trek: First Contact" praise. That movie is so underrated around here. :(

It was the worst TNG movie, actually, in that it was the blandest. Although it had fewer flaws than Nemesis.

Re: Insurrection was the best TNG movie.

I liked Insurrection a lot more than Nemesis, but Insurrection is defintely no First Contact. I loved the Insurrection space battle stuff. And having a few New Age tendencies myself, I actually understood and appreciated the messages.

But to each his own.
