Instead of the Maquis

Edinburgh

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Could Voyager been better, had they chased another ship and got stuck in the Delta Quadrant.

What about a ship full of ferengi. :wtf:
Or maybe romulans. :rommie:
Who do you think would be better ?

Trying to integrate Ferengi or Romulans would be more difficult than the Maquis.IMO

Anyone have any thoughts or idea's on what MIGHT have made Voyager even better than it was.:bolian:

Sorry if this has been discussed before.

the maquis were terrorists. that should have been enough for some interesting conflict.

if they integrated romulans instead, i bet they would act like bland starfleet officers after 2 or 3 episodes of uninspired technobabble.

Romulans, no doubt.

They've been the Feds enemies since before the Federation was formed, they're the major enemy race out there that hadn't been given a lot of depth in Modern Trek compared to the Klingons and Cardassians, and they'd make for a great crew to have tensions with.

Keep the Maquis if you have to, but they should be a small gang in the form of a minor third faction compared to the Feds and Rommies.

Of course, the Rommies should be closer in numbers to the Fed crew instead of just being 30 guys like the Maquis were.

Andorians. that woulda given us some good opportunity for conflict.

otherwise, I was ok with the Maquis. havin' them on the ship was a great opportunity for some good stories. woulda been nice if there had been some follow up on 'Learning Curve'. the writers really umm, dropped the ball on that one.

also woulda been cool if the crew had maybe like, more alien diversity and stuff. you know, umm, maybe a couple more Bolians, Vulcans, or other Fed species. we coulda had some episodes that were more from their POV and stuff.

I think the concept of Starfleet having to get along with the Maquis is fine. I know some people think that replacing the Maquis with a more "alien" group of people would allow for more conflict, but I don't see it.

Cardassians already got their fair share of screentime on TNG and DS9. VOY should've had Romulans and explored them more.

Hmmm. Romulans are always interesting. Ferengi, I don't think so. Basically I liked it the way it was. What made the Maquis integrateable in the first place was their underlying relationship to Starfleet, and the Starfleet crew's recognition of some justice in their cause. Conflict is not the only thing that is interesting; in fact, too much conflict can just be wearing.

Andorians, Romulans or perhaps even both. Both were underutilized and the Andorians were pretty interesting in ENT. The Maquis were a pretty good choice but they should have brought some conflict among the Voyager crew. It would certainly have been interesting to see all three of them or some other combination, but if only one could be used, I would choose the Maquis.

I liked the idea of using the Maquis because they could introduce conflict, but not to much - as they would ultimately share a connection with the Starfleet crew. VOY needed to have more Maquis-Starfleet conflict, but like retrogradeloop said, too much is wearing.

A group like the Romulans would have made the conflict wearing, because there wouldn't be an underlaying connection between the crews. It would have taken much, much longer for both groups to intergrate with each other.

My suggestion - if they wanted to add some conflict, they should have had some Tellarites on the show, as both Starfleet and Maquis. Tellarites will argue with someone just for the sake of doing it. :) Having a Maquis-Tellarite would have been interesing. Having a Maquis-Tellarite go up against a Starfleet-Tellarite would have been even more so.

Romulans would have been interesting, but I am fine with the Maquis. What I would have liked to have seen was a bit more tension and conflict between them and the Starfleet people, as well as a difference in protocol and attitudes which lasted throughout the entire series, rather than just a handful of episodes in the first and second season.

It wouldn't have made sense for them to continue to have major differences after 7 years, only each season only was a few months of trek time or something.

Frankly, the Maquis conflict should only have lasted 1 season or a season and a half. Any more than that requires a group with REAL differences who are TRUE rivals, which the Romulans fit well.

the maquis were terrorists. that should have been enough for some interesting conflict.

My thoughts exactly!

I think Romulans would have been interesting but then again if you have a ship full of Romulans used to military discipline they would probably acclimate better to Starfleet than the Maquis. Consequently, the Maquis were a good choice. They could have drawn the conflict out a bit more I guess but then they did do several episodes plus the whole Seska betrayal arc during the first two years. Eventually you just want to get to stories dealing with the alien cultures met along the way, imo.

I don't know, having Romulans don Starfleet uniforms at the end of Caretaker would have been pretty awkward.

I think that having a mixed Starflet and Maquis crew on the ship was a very good idea which worked fine.

I don't think it was necessary with any on-going conflict between the Starfleet personel and the Maquis members. OK, Torres became tame a little too quick regarding her attitud in the first episode. It could have taken at least three episodes before she became what she was in "Parallax" and we should also have seen more of characters like Dalby, Henley, Chell and Gerron before and after they adapted to Starfleet life, maybe something more of Jonas and Suder too before they were revealed as the dangerous persons they were. But overall, the Maquis thing was handled good.

In fact, the Maquis on the ship were no idiots. They realized that Voyager was their ticket home and that they were too few to take over the ship. besides that, they respected Chakotay and when he decided to go Starfleet, they did too. I would have done the same if I had been on the ship, no matter if I liked Starfleet or not.

As for internal conflicts, I'm happy that Voyager never became a series with constant friction between Starfleet and Maquis. I just have to look at "Stargate Universe" with it's downright lousy characters and the constant bickering and arguing between two factions in each and every episode to realize how good Voyager and its characters were in comparision.

Klingons

I think that would have made for some serious conflict as Janeway first fought for command and then fought to keep it.
