Innuit Class progress

I still like to ask the question of why something should be made, beyond the 'its cool' argument. I've seen a lot of people design stuff for very, very specific circumstances that they are unlikely ever to meet, and its a bit iffy. I doubt anyone would build a ship specifically for flying through custard, when the chances of it happening are, to be fair, pretty slim. How often is a starship going to need to sit at the bottom of deep ocean trenches, for example? I dont see it. Everyone else uses probes designed for the task, because it makes sense.

This ship isn't designed for one specific event, but a wide range of situations. It's not designed to do any one thing it does exclusively, but rather cover a broad range of hostile environments for the purpose of in depth scientific inquiry.

Basically it's a small ship designed with an exceptionally well braced keel, powerful SIF and monotanium hull plating, broad spectrum radiation repellent hull lining in addition to the latest multiphasic shields.

The general idea of the ship is it can simply shrug off what larger existing science vessels can't. A larger vessel with this kind of material cost would be both exorbitant, and irresponsible due to the nature of it being in a more high risk environment. Even a vessel or probe designed for such an environment can still meet an untimely end.

To top it all off, there is in universe precedence for a far less well though out vessel constructed rather hastily for the purpose of a deep atmosphere recovery. I cite the Voyager episode "Extreme Risk" as a prime example of both a vessel with similar capacities on a smaller scale and why simply using probes is not always sufficient.

You know, we can bicker all day long about how justified or necessary the ship is for the purpose you outlined, but...

she's a beauty no matter what. <3

That's the currently unnamed vessel class. This fellow is a general purpose 'next gen' cruiserof mid size. I'll work up some exact specs in the near future.
