Info on 2004 Original Series Clamshell box set.

I am new to this forum and would appreciate some advice!
I have seen in my local cd and record shop the three box sets in the clamshell cases of series 1-3. Series 1 is opened and contains the inner case/dvds and booklet etc. Series 2 and 3 are both sealed on the dvd case. There is no apparent booklets present? Are the booklets sealed in with the DVDs or are they more likely missing?. Each set is £5 each.

That set is the best set of Trek ever released (arguably, the VHS tapes are even better, accuracy of music-wise, but the video quality won't be quite as good).

Really depends on your setup. If you have a Blu-ray player, then I’d get the Blu-ray sets as they have both the updated and original effects.

Though there is some debate on which sets have the better sound mix.

That advert is great and although it's very cheesy makes you realise why we l love the original series so much!

That's an awesome price. I had to rebuy mine after a fire and to get all three mint with inserts and sleeves took a few searches and two or three buys to get them all. Absolutely get them. A lot of collectors feel the blu rays are just fine and unload their DVDs but I prefer the DVD prints. Also, if you're gonna be stuck with an altered sound mix, then the DVDs have the most pleasing (the engine rumble never drowns out Kirk's log entries). Also there's no seamless branching, so no effects transition glitches. And if you want the original night of original broadcast opening credits for The Man Trap and Charlie X, that's the only place to get them (with the created by Gene Roddenberry up front).

That's very informative and I will get them first thing tomorrow! I collect original early pressings of CDs and they are not compressed or artificially boosted up with the remastering. It appears as a novice to dvds and everything Star Trek that sometimes newer doesn't always mean better! Cheers again for your advice.

Yes that's very true and the things I remember being good on TV as a child are now generally unwatchable. Star Trek being the exception on the old black and white TV at the time . James.v

One thing that I like about the blu-rays is that Season 3 comes with an unaired alternate version of "Where No Man Has Gone Before," including act breaks with on-screen titles reading "Act I" etc., different opening monologue from Kirk, some different music, and I believe the fight scene at the end is a little longer. An intact film print of this version was discovered some time after the DVD sets, so was cleaned up/restored and included on blu-ray.

Absolutely. I totally forgot about that the other day when I was watching "Spock's Brain." I always watch episodes all the way through the end credits. But it's been a while since I watched this one on DVD. When I got to the original Paramount logo, I just had to smile.


I just wish they included the "rising circle" Paramount logo on the back half of the second season. Ah well.

One of the invisible things I do for the Trek watchings is I cut out the new studio bumper and paste in a period Desilu bumper. The one for the first season, I cribbed from Mission: Impossible. (so it doesn't even have the Paramount tag on it. From my perspective, the Gulf-Western acquisition just happened.)

I put the rising circles on the back half of the second season episodes that I transferred from laserdisc. To my gleeful surprise, it was still on the end of "The Omega Glory" VHS - but only the Columbia House edition. So I have the actual "Norway Productions" version used in 1968 rather than the Paramount logo from the following year.
