It was used inconsistently in season one and abandoned before the end of the year. It wasn't used in the latter two seasons at all until the DVD releases.
Can you clarify what you mean by engine rumble? Are you referring the whooshing noises, when the ship passes by, but in the episodes, not in the various main title shots? Or do you mean the sound effect of the engines working when the ship accelerates?

The rocket sound while in orbit and general flybys. Not the whoosh, the rumble.
Do you happen to recall which do and don't use the rumble in season one offhand? I have the discs you kindly provided, if not.

My guess is City on Edge didn't originally have it. I recall it not being present on the UK tricorder set, though I could be mistaken.

Also, did they add the rumble in on the rest of S1, as well as S2 and 3?

Sorry, I never made a list, but maybe I should at some point. City definitely did not have the exterior engine noise.

No, some of the episodes in the first year don't have the rumble on the Blu Ray mono mix and of the latter two seasons, only Amok Time sounds correct with no engine noise at all.

⏲ Please note there was roughly a 3¼ year gap between these posts ...

To add to the informative comments above, I will also mention that the DVDs have the Desilu/Paramount logos at the very end, not that awful CBS video thing which is like nails on a chalkboard to me.
Hi, J.T.B.

Do you know if the 2004 Star Trek DVD clamshell editions in the red, blue and yellow cases contain the original Desilu and Paramount Television abstract mountain logos? I think the first Paramount title card created was first seen in " A Piece of the Action" and went to "Assignment: Earth in season 2. The next one that may have been seen in season 3 was the Paramount split box....

Welcome to the board.

Please take some time to review the rules for posting here, pinned at the top of this forum. Specifically, the one regarding resurrection of dead threads (this one's been dead for over three years).

We'll leave this one open until you get your answer.

Thanks!
