Infinite Space (DS)

There's a game out for the Nintendo DS called Infinite Space. Wiki link in case you aren't familiar with it.

Anyway, I haven't bought it yet. I'm thinking about it. The reviews are very mixed. Given the crowd here, I thought I'd ask if anyone has played it and if so, what were your thoughts? I love the idea of constructing a starship fleet and kicking ass around the galaxy, but how well is it executed? Are the customization options worthwhile? Are the campaigns interesting and lengthy? What games would you compare it favorably to?

You might check out NeoGAF for some impressions - although they're mostly hardcore players so maybe that won't help.

I've put in 4 hours inbetween FF13 grinding and I quite like it. I would say it's a Japanese equivalent of Star Control 2 - complete with lack of mission log. You better keep notes because otherwise, you're going to lose your place.

I haven't opened it up enough to have full customization yet and the battles feel like slow going right now because I have no special attacks, but I can see it being pretty fun in the long run. People who played the Japanese version said they finished the game in 50 hours or so.

That said, while it's apparently based on an Arthur C. Clarke novel, it's also very Japanese. If you don't like anime at all, you may end up hating the game simply because of it's (seemingly) inane story.

Because, you know, teenagers always become Starship captains... it happened to Chris Pine-Kirk after all.
