So in light of CBS' new guidelines Renegades [http://renegades.show/] hastily removed all reference to Trek in their film and are going on as an independent venture.
This is not the first independent sci fi project to involve a whole host of Trek veterans, again mostly on Kickstarter, even though I hope the Trek fan film stuff can remain, I thought I'd list a few here:

Imagine an anthology film where fans write the rough draft and professionals craft it into a final draft. Fans will design original wardrobe for a slew of Hollywood actors from their favorite shows, and Costume Designers from the industry will come in and create a professional version, working hand in hand. Imagine the hundreds of jobs needed to create a feature film, and have fans participate in every step of the way. Back in 2012, series creator, E.J. De la Pena, was playing a lead in a feature film called “Starship: Rising” written and directed by Neil Johnson. While taking some time on set to get familiar with the character and thinking about a recent suggestion to write a comedy, it occurred to E.J., a consummate sci-fi fan, thought of a blending of 2 of his favorite concepts – starships and Modern Family style mockumentaries. Over time the concept evolved into its current incarnation of “Firefly” meets “The Office”. - featuring Walter Koenig & Adrienne Wilkinson [Renegades]
Some of these seem to have similarities to Star Trek - i.e. set in the future, on a starship, I'm sure there are a few more out there!
