Inception, the reportedly $200 million sci-fi actioner from The Dark Knight helmer Christopher Nolan, has commenced filming in Toyko, Japan, one of the alleged six countries the film is purportedly shooting in. Yes, six.

The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Caine, is due in theaters July 16th, 2010. A picture of Nolan with DiCaprio (who plays the hero of the story) and Watanabe (who plays his nemesis) is available at the link above.

Details of the plot have been sketchy, but the film is a "contemporary science-fiction actioner set within the architecture of the mind".

It sounds like this has been budgeted a little past its means, but I'll be there to see it opening week. Nolan is a smart filmmaker who I trust will make a smart science fiction film (for once).
