The idea seemed to be that younger people who're more "open minded" about abstract concepts "got it" more and the article even suggests that younger viewers, and games, "get" the "levels" aspects and such more.
You do realize that video games have been around for decades, right? I can assure you that there are plenty of people over 35 who grew up with video games. Millenials don't have the market cornered on grasping the concept of "levels".

Re: Inception. Like vs. Age

I'm over 40 and liked the film well enough. Didn't really impress me, but I enjoyed it, and I "got" it. Reminded me of a lot of stuff I've seen before. I find it insulting that I can't "get" a film because I'm older.
Yeah, unfortunately, it appears the "you're too stupid to get it" defense is not working out too well, given the sheer number of thoughtful posters on this board who weren't impressed with the movie. So now it's on to Plan B, which is "you're too old to get it".

You do realize that I do not work for The Los Angeles Times and am not the one who posed the idea that gamers "got" the movie more than those who didn't get the movie, right?

35 and older. Liked the movie. Got it. Had no problem following it.

I think it's a bit funny that there's even an issue, though. It was beautiful to look at, and it flavored the story with some abstractions, and intentionally left questions for its audience to debate, but it's still a chase and shoot action movie. Like The Matrix, it's really not that deep.

I was going to answer I didn't "get" it.

But then on reading this thread I am no longer sure what is meant by "get it". There are far too many open questions still about various things/details but they might be unimportant to "getting it".

The idea seemed to be that younger people who're more "open minded" about abstract concepts "got it" more and the article even suggests that younger viewers, and games, "get" the "levels" aspects and such more. Older viewers, perhaps a bit more rigid in the philosophy views and less prone to more abstract thoughts and ideas were less likely to get it.

I think it's more like, younger people haven't seen a whole lot of movies that cover the same ground, so they tend to be easily impressed and conned into thinking a film is profound or mind-blowing, when it's really just a well executed popcorn flick that deals with concepts handled better elsewhere. When I watched Inception, I saw a lot of echoes of other movies like The Matrix, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Waking Life, and to me it didn't really top any of those films.

Also, as someone who's 35, your poll makes no sense. How should I choose between "35 or younger - Neutral to the movie" and "35 or older - Netural [sic] to the movie"?

You make it sound like being jaded and unable to enjoy a similar concept to a previous film you liked is good thing. I just find fault with this logic, as if I liked something naturally I would like something similar to it.
