In TOS. What happened to the Intrepid?

BigC

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I re watched that episode and Spock "felt the Vulcan's aboard die" That is the crew. But what happened to the actual ship? There is no mention of finding debris or of scanning for them. The reason I ask is that I'm in the planning stage for a new model diorama that will include a derelict Intrepid.

Kirk &Company were so excited to get shore leave they just left the area. I know some will say it was destroyed in the explosion that threw Enterprise clear. But there's no evidence of that, after all The Enterprise survived along with a near powerless shuttle. So what do you think?

Ooops I posted this in the wrong forum, could a moderator please move it to the appropriate area...:(

I always thought the Intrepid would eventually be digested once shields and power gave out.

You could depict the unfortunate ship with her outer hull being eaten away.

...Then again, as the amoeba drained energy from starships rather rapidly, it may have drained energy from the Intrepid's containment systems faster than it drained energy from what was being contained. In which case you might depict the ship as a cloud of finely ground and rather irradiated debris.

But I like the acid-treated hull idea!

But again the giant space amoeba. (That's still hard to type with a straight face) ate energy. Even Chekhov when scanning the system described it as dead not "gone". What ever I decide on the Intrepid, it's going to look like It's been floating dead in space for 130 years or so. The matter antimatter containment system probably by that point would have nothing left to contain.

One would assume that if it were found The Vulcan government would want Vulcan's to board the ship in this case priests. It's going to be interesting.

This raises a question about the Intrepid and the creature-

If it drained all the Intrepid's energy, wouldn't the containment field have collapsed and the ship gone up in a matter/anti-matter explosion? If so, wouldn't that have killed the thing even before the Enterprise got swallowed?

I think it was even eating up the matter and antimatter somehow, possibly the region of space around it was making the ship go through more M/A per second than normal to the point were both were being depleted at an alarming rate, the energy being drained off from the Enterprise before it became a hazard to the ship.

But yeah another vote for having been digested here.

There is a mention of debris, though. After the probe is launched into the space amoeba:

"Are we still in contact with the probe?"
"Yes, sir. Data being relayed.
Readings coming in now, Captain.
Length -- approximately 11,000 miles.
Width -- varying from 2,000 to 3,000 miles.
Outer layer studded with space debris
and waste.
Interior consists of ... protoplasm,
varying from a firmer gelatinous layer
to a semifluid central mass.
Condition ...
living. "
(taken from transcript here)

Though it was not specifically so stated, it was always my impression that what was left of the Intrepid comprised a portion of that "space debris and waste".

Yes. But you would think that Spock of all people would mention if the "space debris" were the remains of the Intrepid. I mean he would be specific about it. "Space debris" could mean any thing, the mystery continues.. ;)

If the core breach took place a ways away from the bug, all that probably did was give the beastie a very filling dessert after dining on the Gamma 7A system and the Intrepid.

Antimatter explosion from inside, that's another matter....
