in the cinema: How did I spot the trekkies without looking?

Heavy breathing from climbing the stairway. Most I saw were grossly outta shape

Don't forget the waddling, like duck and the Worf T-Shirt

Stairway? isn't that like two steps or just a steep ramp for handicapped people?
Are you saying two steps isn't enough to make a typical Trekkie breathe hard?

laugh it up..
i envy those who know they never will face a chronic illness that will hamper their ability to exercise or even walk a block.

pookha who used to spend over an hour three times a week in the gym and walked for miles who at times has trouble walking a block or two.

but yeah of course that is also .. to the young.

I would swear that I saw this guy opening day, but the guy I saw didn't have one of the new uniforms.

really are you sure..
do you know them personally..
many of those i have met are dealing with health issues all the way back to their child hood.
some went through a short period of health were we were able to excericse ect..
but then as you get older things start to decline again.
i know at least three people who had polio when they were younger.
they were not as bad as some but as they hit middle age they got far worse.

others had other health issues.. and throw in certain medications.

yeah some people gain because they eat to much ect but often there are for real medical causes that make it difficult to deal with.

but once again unless you know these people personally just think twice before casting judgement.

and there are many things that make a person worthwhile beyond physcial appearance;.. some thing a trek fan should be aware of.

At the IMAX showing... there was this super hot girl... I totally was thinking she's her with her BF or something... nope by herself.... I was totally no way a girl that hot would be into Star Trek... but then again from my FB account, there are so many hot girls that I would of never guessed to be Star Trek fans... it has to be the rebooot.
Should have asked her out man. Maybe she's into guys who watch her closely at movie theaters.

I go to lots of conventions and know lots of other Trekkies. Most of the fat ones I know are fat because they eat too much.

But who cares? Some people eat too much, some people are porn addicts, some people drink too much but you never see it.. and some people are just assholes. Why sneer at fat people?

There are no trekkies that I have seen in theaters, or fat or something ))))
Hmm, I don't know, was I hot to the others? Too late to ask...

Uhm, because they're fat? :D

No, seriously, I doubt he was trying to sneer at fat people, simply trying to make fun of one of the Star Trek fanbase generalizations. Being fat is one of them. Having no friends is another. Having no other hobbies is yet another. It could have just as well been something else.

This doesn't really mean anything anymore...almost 70% of Americans are overweight.

Honestly, I only saw about 5% of people that looked like obvious trekkies at the theater.

RAMA

Not any more.. not the JJ Abrams Trek Fan. See this new Breed of Fan is very self conscious, and self centered. They believe in War.. prejudice.. and self Hatred... they Don't understand that Trek was a Morality play.. like many series were in the 60's. They believe it's all about glitz and whiz bang explosions. They Don't believe that the whole premise of trek revolved around acceptance.. hence this thread... their the crowd that cuts in front of you in line.. or talks on the cell phone during a movie.. or just plain talks period.. welcome to the new breed of Trek Fans. Thanks alot JJ.

 I do believe you've just excellently described those fans who stubbornly want everything to stay the same and dislike change so much. :D

If you think non-trek fans are asocial people who care nothing for others and do not accept each other, you really need to get some new friends. :D

I agree that a lot of Trekkies have a look about then. I don't think all fans should be tarred with the same brush. There are definately a lot of fans out there who are perfectly normal looking. However, when I saw the movie it was on opening day and in the best cinema in London so naturally the Trekkie quota was quite high. British Trekkies don't tend to wear uniforms just to got the cinema, but I can stop that more, erm, lets say socially inept breed with a combination of the following factors:-

1) Most of the men are rather unfashionable and there on their own or with another of their basement dwelling mates. They are usually kitted out in unfashioanble trainers, jeans and a jacket that they probably bought in the eighties.

2) The women are dull looking, never learned how to use make up, with daring hairstyles of either platts or straight long hair - no dye of course.

3) All of those wearing glasses cannot seem to, for the life of them, buy a pair of frames that were fashionable in the last 15 years.

4) 50% of the men have Riker beards.

5) 50% of the men are fat bastards.

6) The unfashionable ones are often also, curiously, very enthusiastic about any subject they are talking about... most commonly computers.

7) The number of middle aged men there with their mother or father vastly outweighs the number with wives or girlfriends.

8) Half of them are holding bags containing items bought before the movie in the local geek shop (in this case Forbidden Planet).

9) 20% of them smell really bad and have not had a shower in several decades (seriously, what's up with that????).

10) The shorter ones inevitably walk around with darting eyes that make them look like a nervous ferret.

11) They are the only people who think using a wrinkled plastic carrier bag instead of a briefcase or sling bag is acceptable.

I'm not prejudice. Honest.

Gee. I suppose you'd have picked me out of the lineup at the theater. I went alone, I'm overweight, I'm probably older than you are, and I laughed at some of the in jokes. I liked the old Star Trek, so sue me. I also like other things and I never owned Spock ears or a Klingon uniform or went to a Star Trek convention. The guy sitting next to me was apparently a rabid Trekker since he spent the entire movie giving a running commentary: "Yeah, F--- you guys." when Spock's giving the Vulcan Council the "go to hell" speech. I wouldn't have pegged him as a Trekkie by his age or appearance or who he was with. People of all ages and interests like Star Trek. This thread is obnoxious.

El Chup I know a few Trekkies IRL and one male Trekkie is as you describe, everything but the Riker beard. He's also a very nice guy and very interesting to talk to. One female Trekkie I know is also as you describe and a person of vast knowledge in diverse areas.

I like people who aren't fashion conscious, who live in their own interests and don't worry about crap like what kind of container they carry objects in and whether it looks good or not. They are refreshing. I often have to remind myself to be more image oriented and it's nice to be around folks that just don't bother.

That image is not hosted on web space belonging to you. I have converted the image to a link.

1) Please read the TrekBBS policy pertaining to posting images.

2) Posting another image hotlinked from someone else's web space may result in a warning for you.

3) Did trolling with a (hotlinked!) picture supposed to represent a "typical" Trekkie really sound like a good idea to you? You'll want to watch that, too.
