In Return of the King what was Gandalf laughing at?

WraithDukat

Captain
Captain
When Frodo is in bed....

Was he laughing at Frodo and Sam poncing on? Or did he finally get a joke that had been bugging him all day..

It was an homage to the 1980's He-man where characters would give a rousing laugh to almost anything.

They say in the book that after Sauron is defeated Gandalf becomes jovial and laughs all the time, because his thousand (?) year long task was finally completed and evil was vanquished and he could relax and enjoy himself.

I thought it was the, "I can't believe we survived against impossible odds" trope.

It was probably just Sir Ian laughing because he knew how much his bank account was going to grow, and PJ just decided to leave it in the scene.

:p

i thought it was Sir Ian laughing due to his reading the script, knowing there were like 3 more endings that were going to take place, while the audience thought this second ending was it.

I can't find the quote I'm thinking of, but here' this:

“Gandalf! I thought you were dead! But then I thought I was dead myself. Is everything sad going to come untrue? What's happened to the world?"
"A great Shadow has departed," said Gandalf, and then he laughed and the sound was like music, or like water in a parched land; and as he listened the thought came to Sam that he had not heard laughter, the pure sound of merriment, for days upon days without count.”

...nope...I have it on good authority that Frodo let out a little "freep" as Sam walked in, and Gimli responded with a dwarfly "flutterblast"...needless to say, Jackson had to clear the set until the smell cleared...reshoot, but they left Gandolf's reaction in...McKellen said, "...now that is a smell which I should not like to smell, ever again..."

It's cause he wanted to outdo his bff Patrick Stewart.
