in "REAL" time

There was a movie with Johnny Depp sometime back called NICK OF TIME. And there is also the show 24, and maybe others I am not bringing up here. But do movies/TV shows in real time really work? Are these the two best examples of attempts at real time that worked (if you believe they worked?)

Now, MEMENTO might be another one, but I can't recall if that movie happened in real-time or just went backwards.

You mean like in theatre or what?

Well..the events in 24 all supposed to happen as they were to happen in real time...NICK OF TIME was an hour/half movie, and the movie takes place in an hour/half of time. Meaning, what you are seeing happening is happening in the amount of time you are seeing it happen (whoo..I'm dizzy)

Two good examples that come to mind are The Rope and Russian Ark, though the fact they take place 'in real time' is highlighted by the fact the latter film is done in a single take and the former is essentially long, continuous takes.

Thanks KEGG for replying. I love it when people respond with movies, like these two, that I have never even heard of...will seek them out!

Didn't Al Pacino just do a movie like that called 88 minutes? I didn't see it, but I think it is like Nick of Time.

There's a little-seen movie called "Real Time" about a compulsive gambler (Jay Baruchel) given one hour to live by the man hired to kill him (Randy Quaid). I would hope there's truth in advertising especially since it would only take an hour to show an hour of real time. :p

Miracle Mile with Anthony Edwards is great. It's about a guy who gets a phone call in a diner that says, missiles have been launched, they'll be here in 70 minutes, from that point in the movie it's real time. You watch the result of that one phone call. It's a great movie.

Watch the film Timecode. It's set in real-time and filmed with multiple cameras in multiple locations. It's a fascinating film exercise in timing.

I wasn't that successful but Julia Louis-Dreyfus had a sitcom on NBC called Watching Ellie which progressed in real time. (She did it after Seinfeld but before The New Adventures of Old Christine.)

I thought Phone Booth worked pretty well.

Damn straight! One of my favorite movies.

Every copy of this movie should be destroyed. Everyone who has seen it should be forced into silence by threatening their pets with death. Seriously, do NOT see 88 Minutes.
