Improving Fallout3

Things i'd like to see to improve Fallout 3:

Weapon making:

Instead of the whole getting schematics and items and just building pre designed weapons I want the ability to custom build some. This is how it will work:
You go to the work bench and click an option to design a new weapon, there is a list of different weapon 'casings' or 'shells' if you will, from a shotgun to a pistol to a rifle and others.
Now in order to choose a weapon frame you need the required amount of scrap metal to build it, so if you have enough scrap metal for a shotgun casing then you can pick that casing.
After you've got your casing you then can use other items you've found to develop your weapon. The weapon diagram will have 'slots' on it where you can put these different items to customise your weapon. If for example you have some bullets you place the bullets in the ammo slot and the gun becomes a projectile weapon and fires those particular bullets, if instead you have plasma cells and put those in the weapon it becomes a plasma weapon and fires plasma bolts, if you put lasers cells in it fires laser. Other slots can be for if you want a scope on the weapon, or there can be a slot for an 'amplifier' of which there will be different sizes you can scavenge so if you attach an extra large amplifier it amplifies the destructive force of the weapon. Another slot could be for a 'chargeup pack' which allows you to keep your finger on the trigger and it causes the weapon to charge up and upon release a more powerful shot is fired.

I'd like to see an extra interface option when talking to people. In Oblivion you could bribe people money with an extra interface, well i'd like to see an extra interface which allows you to bribe people or impress people and if they're impressed enough you can hire them to go with you and fight with you regardless of who they are (except main characters).

Bikes

In Oblivion you could ride horses so I don't think it would be too much of a stretch if they introduced motorbikes in Fallout for you to use to get about. The motorbikes could be custom bikes that are powered by energy cells, if you don't have the energy cells you can't ride the bikes. They can be scattered about the place like all the derelict cars.

Purchasing Houses.

In Oblivion you could purchase houses. In Fallout i'd like something 'similar'. I want to be able to come across a derelict run down damaged house and be able to 'squat in it' and become the owner of it. I then want to be able to go to a store and purchase some goods which I can then take back to the house and fix it up and create a mini fort. I think it would have been nice if you could go to the robo factory with tons of scrap metal and energy cells etc and turn the machines on and build a robot which you can then order to protect your new fort.

Anyone else got any ideas?

One thing i would fix now is that stupid 20XP cap limit......and why we have to wait until the third add-on before that issue is resolved is beyond me....and god help them if increasing the cap level patch is only available with the purchase of that 3rd DLC.

OK rant over.

Loading times could be improved(I'm talking about the 360 version).

The repair thing can get quite annoying when you cant find other similar stuff to use as repair spares....the Tesla armour is hard to find and keep in tip top condition.

I want a robot companion....Its that simple.

I don't know what I did but I did it all without a companion or even the suggestion of someone joining me.

I have to say the last mission is cool but as easy as Paris Hilton. I played it as a good guy and I really only had one choice in what to do at the end in that I did the deed, if you are bad does it change...in fact how does being bad change things? All I know is that with being a good guy I get free stuff from randoms once or twice a day/visit to Megaton.

Got to say the game was fairly easy with the Anchorage add-on. I played it where I went and did that first and a friend hasn't done it (for some reason he added it after install but can't get the quest to appear) and he is having a tough time.

This is an aesthetic suggestion, and so not particularly important, but...

ANIMATION. Holy god, the game is beautiful, but the character animations SUCK. They look like they're floating 6 inches above the ground and their movements have NO relation with the terrain whatsoever.

Playing the game in 1st person mode makes it one of the best looking games out there (save for character models)

But playing it in third person makes it look like it's from 2002.

I agree with you Twilight, Bethesda makes some good games but they really, really suck at animating the characters in their games (your character has the worst animations, though the animations of the rest of the characters in the world aren't that great either). I'm not sure why they're so incompetent at it, maybe some of it is limitations of the Oblivion game engine?

I completed the game first time around with no companion, you don't need one. But the truth is it's nice to have that choice, the choice to be able to just persuade someone to join you, it's an extra pair of hands that comes in handy sometimes and a bit more realism to the game.
If you're stuck in the middle of DC and you're running low on ammo and you've got 5 mutants baring down on your position with mini guns it's nice to have a companion they can shoot up first or it's nice to have a companion who can take one down whilst you sort out the rest.
I think everybody is capable of completing the game companion free but it's a nice bonus sometimes.

There is a robot companion... but he's kind of weak.

I had no idea, i reached level 20 and just stopped when i could get no more xp,the game seemed to lose most of its point when that happened.......last perk i got was the explorer perk that revelled all the map, and there are loads to do and plenty of places still to visit, but i personally feel it would be a waste to continue with my onslaught without gaining XP...so i have stopped completely until this patch come out that increases the xp cap too 30.

I just hope the rumours around the net about the patch to increase the XP level to 30 only being available to people who buy the third released DL content are not true, and that the increased XP cap will be available to everybody.

Totally agree on this, the 3rd person animations are borderline embarrassing because they are so simple. I think 2002 is giving it too much credit honestly, they are rudimentary at best. Whoeverthey got to model the running of your character, or any unarmed character for that matter, obviously has never ran much in his/her life because they look like a robot. Not as odd as Mass Effect running, but just too rigid and it doesn't ever appear like there's any impact on the ground when moving.

Another thing that bothers me about fallout3 is when you can bodge up future quests without even knowing you've done it until later in the game.

For example, I came across paradise falls on my first time playing and did the quest to capture those 4 people, one of them being that Red person. Well I capture them in that police cell and then later on in the game I discover big Town by taking that kid from little lamplight there. Well they want me to go and rescue Red from the german prison, i'm like WTF dude! I just sent the idiot to paradise falls!!!!!!

Another example is in Megaton where you do that stupid survivers guide book (probably one of the first quests you decide to do when you get out of the vault), she sends you to the minefield to check it out, I ended up killing the sniper guy only to find out later that he's one of the people I need to turn into a slave for the Paradise falls quest.

I mean who the hells stupid idea was THAT!

I dont think its bad quest writing, ita more like it forces you to choose a path and if you want to experience all the game has to offer you have to play it in more then one way.

Agreed. However, you can complete the slaver mission if the minefield sniper (Arkansas?) is already dead, which is what I did. I think you can complete the mission with only one captured person if the other 3 are dead.

My biggest peeve is the aforementioned XP limit. I was shocked when I realized I was maxed out. I felt that I had barely begun the game and, in fact, based upon how much more there was left to do, that was essentially true. Doubling annoying for me was that I wasted some of my perks with the accelerated XP ones. Lots of good those do me now.

I'm also annoyed at the bug that doesn't award the "Scientific Pursuits" achievement if you visit the Jefferson Memorial prior to starting that quest. I have all the quest achievements except that one and "The Nuka Cola Challenge," which I'm working on and can hopefully complete. Oh, that's another thing. You're shown how to make powerful grenades with the very rare Nuka Cola Quantums early on then late in the game (for me at least) you get a quest telling you to collect 30 of the bottles! :klingon:

Still, I love this game and can't wait for more DLC and to start over with a different character to get the karma-related achievements and make different decisions.

Level cap is a bitch, but I'll be buying the download anyways, since it sounds cool, so that soon won't be a problem.

The main thing I hate is the radio music. It's fine at first, but come on. It's the same 4 songs over and over again. They should add a patch that pulls music from your hard drive and plays that randomly over the radio between Three Dog updates. That way you would still get to hear Three Dog, but you also would get other music.

The level cap thing cap is really annoying. If you abandon the main quest and just start wondering around doing everything except the main quest, the cap can be reached pretty fast.

Another thing that has to be changed is the truly idiotic ending of the main quest, but one of the DLC is supposed to take care of that.

Some of you may or may not know that there is a patch out for the 360 version.

"
Fallout 3. One of the most hotly controversial cross-platform projects of 2008, the PlayStation 3 version in particular came in for plenty of criticism owing to its often-poor frame rate - though Digital Foundry was somewhat more even-handed in its Eurogamer assessment at the tail-end of last year.
It turned out that Xbox 360 version, despite its superior frame rate and full-on 4x MSAA, had flaws of its own - notably some inferior textures when viewed close up, along with a lack of specular maps on the monsters and characters, resulting in a somewhat flat look compared to the other versions of the game.
As it happens, the latest Fallout 3 patch isn’t just preparation code for the upcoming DLC… one of the small issues with the launch 360 game has been addressed: the specular maps are back. Perhaps the omission was simply a bug? Or perhaps not, because while the effect has been replaced in the more obvious locations, elsewhere it is still absent. But regardless, it’s an obviously welcome addition for 360 owners, and we presume that the upcoming DLC will be looking as good as it can possibly be. Nice.

Speculars are back. In certain places, at least. This polished effect was incorporated into the PS3 and PC versions of the game, but only now, post-patch, is it seen in the 360 code…

However, it’s not all good news. The lower resolution textures, only really apparent when viewed close-up, remain as they were on 360, with PS3 still having the edge"

Interesting about the patch. As my 360 is always online, I got the patch the first time I played after it was uploaded. I went looking on the official website for patch info, but all it said was it was prep for the next DLC. I hadn't noticed any graphical changes but I'll keep an eye out now.

I don't know if anyone else has seen the screenshots for the upcoming 2nd DLC 'The Pitt' yet, but they look awesome. Totally different look between the Capital Wasteland and 'The Pitt'.

In this mission you are going to lose your items, because you are supposed to pose as a slave to get into The Pitt, which is a slaver stronghold. You get everything back when you return to the Capital Wasteland, plus some new gear. One thing I saw which was new was the steel cutter, which is this thing:

Has anybody else downloaded the GECK? I downloaded it yesterday and i've started building my own levels up! it's fricking awesome!!!!! :D
