Improve Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Short version: Bring Gene Coon back from the dead to have him rewrite the script.

Long version:

-Have the characters be ACTIVE in solving the problem rather than just passively reacting to V'Ger.

-Add in the wonderful humor and personality that the TOS characters displayed in even the most dire situations. TMP takes itself WAY too seriously. For instance, Nimoy's proposed line, "If Doctor McCoy is to remain aboard, my pressence is essential," would definitely be in the final scene.

-Action! Get the characters off the damn bridge! Everyone was still young enough to plausibly handle some action & excitement -- let's take advantage of that!

-I'd give V'Ger a more human face than the Illia probe for the crew to interact with & react to. A hero is only as good as his villain.

-More character conflict. If Decker has to be there, let's give him a reason to be there & have him actively engage Kirk. I'd also make Kirk, Spock & McCoy less miserable throughout the movie. It's be nice if at least one of the big three was well-adjusted & wanted to be there.

-I'd have the uniforms be more colorful & reminicent of the TV series.

Just give the script a quick once over, maybe have them come across a Klingon ship in the V'ger cloud, radically decrease the number of close up reaction shots.

Ilia should be ninja killbot who rip's Kirk's shirt before making love to him (sex is a Deltan's most powerful weapon after all)

Insert a break for folks to order pizza during the V'Ger grand tour - we called that the "Big Mac" sequence in 1979 because one guy at my place of employment left the Jenifer II theater, went across to the McDonalds at Mazza Gallerie, ordered a meal and returned with it before the end of it.

Tell us how you would make it a better movie without taking V'Ger out of the storyline.
Micro skirts, gratuitous sex and pointless space battles.

Likely wouldn't improve it, but it probably would make more money.

Sounds like a Robert Rodriguez version of TMP...;)

Come to think of it, I wouldn't mind seeing Michelle Rodriguez in a Trek duty skirt and boots...kickin' ass...

...Kickin' V'Ger's ass...:)

Oh, yeah..

And Jessica Alba as Illia...

I want to say Danny Trejo as a Klingon, but I am not fond of the Klingons from TMP onward...

And, come to think of it, Robert Rodriguez films are not heavy on plot...sooo....Hmmm...

Tommy Wisseau. That is all.

I like the suggestion of adding in the scene with Admiral Nogura, don't think there would be time for flashbacks concerning Ilia and Deckard not to mention a budget to shoot scenes on Delta. I would alter the uniforms to resemble the original series uniforms as well, maybe even as a pre-cursor to the Star Trek II military flak jackets.

With regards to the poster in the first page who said something about how Spock's human side was "touched" by V'Ger, I thought that it was an obvious analogy to Spock's emotional human side combined with his Vulcan telepathic abilities made contact with V'Ger and caused the disruption of the Kholinar ceremony.

I think a better alternative would be to use Harold Livingston's draft (memory-alpha.org/wiki/In_Thy_Image). I would also omit Spock and Chekov from the story as a bit of an inside joke to Leonard Nimoy not wanting to come back on a new show and Walter Koenig being unavailable for TAS.

Well, Koenig did write an episode where Spock was HUUUUUGE.

Have Shatner shave off his hair completely and just have a goatee and a mustache.

Get a better Red Alert sound.

Come up with better costumes and lighting.

The only thing I need to make Star Trek: The Motion Picture better is to have the 'Special Longer Version' broadcast by ABC on Blu-Ray.

That is what I want except for two things. I currently don't own Blu-Ray and I want two of the effects shots from the DE in the SLV.

Yes, please.

Blu-Ray players are getting cheaper and cheaper month by month-get off your butts and get one. Asking ABC to broadcast ST: TMP in Blu-Ray is utterly pointless and stupid-they might as well just broadcast it in HD.
Star Trek is about new life and new civilizations idealy with a personal risk to the crew, not about crew members throwing hissy fits.

^THIS!!!!

Something that needed to be said all this time in these forums, each and every time people bring up this nonsense about how Star trek characters aren't 'real' enough? You mean as real as the fuck-ups on BSG? People who wouldn't last a day in a real navy?

Walter Koenig being unavailable for TAS.

He was available for TAS! The Filmation voice budget just didn't allow him to be there. Original plans were for James Doohan to perform Scotty, Sulu and Arex, and Majel Barrett to perform Chapel, M'Ress and Uhura. Leonard Nimoy refused to sign until Nichelle Nichols and George Takei were hired.

Dorothy Fontana tied to make it up to Koenig by offering him a writing gig. Different segment of the budget.

Please...Kirk wouldn't last a week in "a real navy."

People who want the Trek characters to be "more real" are actually saying that they'd like the Trek characters to be interesting on an adult level. They almost never are.
