Important Things in Life

I was sitting around with a couple of buddies and we were discussing our high schools and colleges. I brought up the point that a lot of stuff you have to take is a complete waste of time and have no bearing in your life.

My theory is this: A person should be able to do the basics like read, write, spell and know basic math so they can manage money, but why does a person need to know chemistry, biology, physics, etc if they have no plans to go into a field that requires this knowledge.

While growing up all I wanted to do was be a tanker in the US Army. My parents forced me to take chemistry, biology and trigonomentry and other stuff. I am now 42 years old and served as a tanker for 12 years, looking back at my life after hs/college not once did I ever use chemistry, biology or physics or trig. In my opinion it didnt make me smarter nor did it have any bearing on my life so what was the point in taking it?

Biology helps you to know just where to shoot of knife someone depending if you want to wound or kill them.

Chemistry: Why the ammo works and explodes

Physics: Why the tank works, how the guns work, how to steer the tank.

Hows that for a very very simple breakdown?

I think some times people discover that they like these subjects and change there mind about what they want to do also some people don't know what they want to do so extra classes help them decided.
Also these days you never know when you might have to change careers. But i do think for people who are struggling in school maybe they need to cut back on what they teach them and concentrate on the basics.
I know i left school unable to spell and use basic grammar and i am crap at maths so there was no point in the school trying to teach me all the other stuff.

Most people change careers several times, even those who already think they have a life-long career planned out in high school. How are the teachers supposed to know you would operate a tank for 12 years. It's better to cover the bases.

All you need to know is the big one in the neck -- cut that open and he/she will bleed to death.

Why it works? He doesn't need to know why it works, it just does. "Why" is left to people who make the stuff. Same with the tank.

Well, if you want to be creepy, you can always slash someone on the inside of their thigh and watch as their Femoral pumps out and say "5 minutes there pal"

If you think the only reason to take these classes is to learn the information in them, then you really AREN'T prepared for life.

P.S. And you also would have learned the correct spelling of "Antarctica". :)
