I happened to glance at the Star Trek page at IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0796366/), and there seems to be quite a comprehensive list of the cast and crew there.

Indeed, one might say a little too comprehensive. There seem to be an awful lot of people with extremely minor roles, and inversely exceptionally detailed actor profiles.

This gives the impression of a lot of rather desperate people adding themselves to the cast list, for whatever joy or career benefit it will bring.

How much of this extensive cast and character list is likely to be real?

The vast majority of that list is definitely correct. Of the 90+ actors listed on IMDB, only 18 are listed as "unconfirmed" at Memory Alpha. Now before you go criticizing my source for being a Wiki site, note all the confirmed actors have their own listing on MA, each including a link to a reliable source confirming their appearance in the movie. Those 18 could still actually be in the movie anyway. We'll see.

Maybe it's from a scene where young Jimmy and his friends are playing "Starfleet and Klingons", which is a 23rd century version of "Cowboys and Indians" or "Cops and Robbers", and that boy's only part in the film is in that one scene pretending to be a "Klingon", so that's how he's listed...

That's what tipped me off. Of course, they could just be enthusiastic aspiring actors who are excited to have been a part of something that will set them off on the path to stardom, but I'm a cynic...

actually the 'real' plot of Trek XI involves Spock using the Guardian of Forever and ending up in Mojo World from X-Men where he encounters baby versions of the original crew as well as next gen. baby kirk and picard can't seem to get along and baby scotty gets baby worf drunk. its also part romantic comedy.
