When a movie comes out that I like (in this case Sucker Punch), there is not always a lot of places to discuss it. Sure there is the thread over in the scifi forum, but that's not getting a whole lot of replies. So naturally I will head over to the IMDB because I know there will always be people there discussing the movie in detail.

Of course that urge only lasts me a week or two as those message boards are always full of trolls, especially for movies that just came out. It's been this way always over there, which leads me to wonder, why?

Why are the boards over there so poor? Supposedly there are moderators over there, and yet the boards are still full of trolls who's aim is to 1: spoil the movie. 2: Ridicule those who liked the movie. 3: Just exist to piss in the cheerios of those who loved the movie.

IMDB gets a lot of traffic daily, I have friends and family who use the sight to get information on movies or tv shows they are watching or are interested in. You would think there would be more of an effort to make the message boards friendly to all people, instead it looks like the moderators (if they exist) don't give a shit and just turn a blind eye to all the crap that goes on over there.

I don't post at IMDB, but the discussion board layout looks pretty poor, and I don't think it'd be possible to fully moderate something that extensive. There's the potential for a discussion board for every single actor, TV show and movie out there.

You could try and find other boards that are like TrekBBS with diverse forums to look up movie discussions.

Youtube is not something I really consider a place to go to discuss things. I go to youtube to watch videos and listen to music. Sometimes I glance over the comments, it's usually the same thing, insulting the video, insulting someone else, or insulting Justin Bieber.

I've seen how some unmoderated sites moderate themselves. People click on "report abuse" or whatever they call the button that's next to a post, and if enough people do it, the post automatically gets removed. And if it happens to the same user a few times, he or she automatically gets banned.

Something IMDB recently did, (and maybe there's a way to change that but it's not immediately obvious to me) that really pissed me off was displaying the names of movies and tv-shows not in the original anymore but under the name they were released in my country which is annoying not only because I don't recognise the names since I watch all that stuff in English but also because the German titles of the movies are very often completely idiotic, especially movies from before 2000ish or so. (for example a couple days ago I wanted to look up something about the movie Breaking Away, and apparently the German title is "Vier irre Typen", which translates as "four crazy guys" - wtf, could you come up with something less inspiring if you tried to?)

And yes, IMDB's discussion boards are complete shit, the "faq" sections are often useful though.

^ If I interpret this correctly, Roger doesn't like IMDB's practice of listing movies and shows using only their local titles (i.e. what users in their own country will see). He says he watches everything in English so he recognizes stuff by how the U.S. calls it. In other countries, shows and films often get different names due to language translations, and if he doesn't watch them in the local versions, he won't recognize the titles.

My favourite thing about IMDB is that you can go to the board of every great movie in existence and find a thread titled "THIS MOVIE SUCKS", "WORST MOVIE EVER", "OVERRATED CRAP" or something to that effect.

I post on IMDB maybe half a dozen times per year, mostly if I see a post that gives me an opportunity to help someone who has a question about an actor, movie, or TV show I know a lot about. Occasionally I'll express an opinion there, but it's really not the place to go regularly for intelligent discussion about something.

I swear, we're spoiled here. I've been to many, many message boards in my day and so far this is one of the only ones I haven't eventually left due to frustration or irritation with how rude and stupid people are. This is really a haven for me with how much more mature and considerate its general population is compared to than of so many other sites.

Yes, exactly. For example when I look at the Top250 list or whatever or look for a movie that just got released on the front page, all the title are in German and I don't even know what half these movies are.
