Imagine how much a movie like this would have made in 70s/80s...

I think it's unfair to judge the 193 mil box office receipts so far based on present day inflation. Meaning, yes a movie ticket is more expensive these days which in turn equals higher numbers for a particular movie.

However, we also live in a time where people either wait to download bootleg copies, buy the dvd or blu-ray, or rent it on their local digital cable provider via streaming. These are all options that simply never existed back in the 70s/80s.

Add in the fact families didn't have some fancy smancy TV or home theatre set up, and the best option was go to to the movies. And not just once, but a multitude of times. It's same reason why movies these days ususally have less legs than what films did 30 plus years ago.

So with that I would argue Star Trek would have made Star Wars money had it been able to have been made back in those days.

I think the fact it will cross 200 million in an era where most people stay home, and is during the summer movie season, is nothing short of a huge accomplishment. Imagine if this had some out during the winter season w far less competition?

Nuff said.

Argument also doesn't fly when compared to the Batman movie from last year. We were under the same economic circumstances then. You may have forgotten $4.50/ gal gas.

I think The Dark Knight is an unfair comparison also; that was a perfect box office storm, due in no small part to the hype after Heath Ledger's untimely death.

They built an entire advertisement campaign on Ledgers death. TDK wasn't any better than Batman Begins.

Boy... I HATE saying this, but a movie LIKE this - Action Star Trek - wouldn't have been so good in the seventies.

Could you imagine the Shat chewing scenery in his prime? Putting that "Khaaan/I Am Captain Kirk" O-face again? I love the old stuff dearly, but damn... you couldn't have gotten a good movie out of that.

Now, if you mean a prequel with a more controlled actor in the Kirk role? Well, it would have been a gas, except I'd have been screaming like Rupture about the replacement, even though it would have been an improvement. Of course, at the time I thought "The Groovy Ghoulies" was pretty good TV, so I abjure Perigee Prime as a reliable critic.
