I'm Sorry, Bill Gates...

Windoze 95

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I have an iBook (well, almost!)! I have to fix someone's computer before it's mine, but still, it's the first mac to enter our house. I can't post from it because it runs OS X 10.1.5, and I can only get Netscape 7 to work semi-properly. The browser crashes whenever I go to YouTube, Google, etc, probably because of too much flash/javascript.

Well, she's an old iBook, from late 2001, with a 500 MHz processor and 256 megs of ram. It weighs about 5 pounds, but I've gotten used to carrying it around. :techman:

Whenever I'm able to use a wireless network, I'm streaming from a Pennsylvania classic rock station in iTunes. :p

I've managed to get 3 of my music CDs into the library so far. I plan to convert my vinyl records... :D

So, yes, gawk at the beauty of my iBook! I've also managed to get a joke out of the spoken commands engine.

I will try to get pictures as soon as I can.

And I thought I was the only person here on Trek BBS still using such antiquated hardware and system software. I've got a nearly ten-year-old Mac G4 running OSX 10.1 and an old version of Firefox. I can access YouTube, but half the videos either play at like 3 frames per second or won't play at all because of my obsolete FlashPlayer.

Have you tried disabling JavaScript? That's what I usually do when posting here. My old browser runs a lot faster that way. Of course, with JavaScript turned off, I have to type in all the HTML formatting codes manually, which is a pain in the butt.

Download Firefox, dude. :D

I've got the installer for an old version in a compressed format. But the stupid de-compressor won't do anything without a certain version of the application engine.

Safari will probably perform better on that.

I didn't know they even had electricity back in 2001.

It was all done with mirrors.

Srsly though, in terms of mobile technology it seems like an entirely different era.

Back in the day when the internet ran on hopes and dreams...

Back in the day when the internet ran on hopes and dreams...

Remember when the internet was going to end nationalism?

... although I do think that, on the whole, it's been beneficial in that respect. And of course there's still a long way to go re: internet access in developing nations and bringing down the language barrier. The more we're forced to see each other as human beings instead of an amorphous mass with a flag sticking out of it, the better off we'll be.

. . . The more we're forced to see each other as human beings instead of an amorphous mass with a flag sticking out of it, the better off we'll be.
On the other hand, the anonymity of the internet has made it a whole lot easier for people to be rude, vulgar assholes.

Uhm.. i don't get it. Is this thread supposed to be sarcasm?

If it was i'm missing it because all i understood is some guy using an old Apple laptop to go online and because of outdated software has problems :wtf::confused:

A 2001 Macbook? thats ultra modern compared to my Compaq Contura, 486, 40Mhz, 8 Mb RAM oh and it runs Windows 95..

True enough. Fortunately they're a whole lot easier to ignore than in real life.

I don't really have problems on here, but I think the browser dies 'cause the poor old thing only has Flash Player 6...
