I'm Sick and Feel Like Bitching

My husband caught a cold after travelling, and of course it was inevitable that I too would get sick. Sure enough, Day1: wake up with horrible sore throat. Day 2: Heavily medicate myself so I can make it to class. Day 3: Wake up at four in the morning desperately searching in the dark for my nebulizer and medication.

So I'm cranky. Because inevitably, when I get sick, there's always someone that says bullshit like "Drink lots of water and take some Vitamin C, that always helps and you'll be over it in a day."

No. No, I won't be over it in a day. When I get a cold it's this horribly long drawn out process that often leaves me wondering if I'm going to lose the ability to breathe altogether.

Also cranky that my classes place such heavy emphasis on attendance. I get that you need to be there to learn, and I do go to every lecture and I'm an incredibly diligent student. But if someone doesn't go to class, they're not going to do well on the homework and other assignments. Why do you need to have a separate grade for attendance? Do you really want me to come to class when I'm sick just so I don't get docked a huge percentage of points? That's just irresponsible because who knows who else I'll infect.

Finally, I'm sick of people who complain over every little minor ache, pain, or cold. I get pretty sick with moderate frequency, so even sometimes I feel like having a pity fest. But I'm sitting here, unable to sleep, breathing with great difficulty, and I know that there are people out there who have it infinitely worse than me. So the next time you feel all "woe is me" try to get a little perspective!

/end random rant

Thanks. :) And no, not a superbug. I'm not quite that unlucky, thank goodness. It's such a terrible thing to have to deal with.

I feel great. Had a good night's sleep, good time at work, and the weather is just gorgeous: I really feel energized.

I know I am lucky: I hope you will feel as good soon enough.

Whenever I get a cold my asthma gets really bad and though I get over the running nose, headache, cough etc in a couple of days, my shortness of breathe can last for weeks and totally saps the energy from me.

My son has a cold at the moment, so I am doing what my doctor suggested when I got my last cold - and that is take a short course of prednisolone in a hope that it boasts my immune system enough to stop my asthma from getting bad.

In the past I have taken prednisolone when I already had a cold, this is the first time I have taken it when I have had really early symptoms.

I'm much the same in regards to the shortness of breath lasting a long time. I'll end up getting exhausted so easily without doing much of anything. I have taken prednisone in the past, it's just something I really dislike taking and only use in very bad situations.

I also dislike taking it as it makes me feel sick if I take it for more than about three days. It worsens my GERD. My doctor has told me never to take it for any longer than those three days because my GERD is also a trigger for my asthma. This time I will take it for 3 days and then stop for a few days and if I need to take a second short course.

GERD? When I take it I'm usually on a twelve day course. I hate it, but it does help.

GERD = Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. Unlike the majority of people who have GERD I rarely get heartburn instead I suffer from nausea and vomiting.

The biggest problem with my GERD besides it aggravating my asthma is that I cannot take certain medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen and Celebrex. This really limits the treatment of my arthritis and is the reason I am on a disability pension.

Weather extremes aggravate my asthma, and it doesn't help that I've been suffering from the effects of anxiety for the past few years. Plus, I have absolutely ridiculous allergies. I'll start reacting to something in the air, then I'll feel my chest tighten and it will grow steadily more difficult to breathe, then my blood pressure starts freaking out... it's truly wonderful.

In all seriousness, I agree with you about being sick and tired of people complaining over every little thing, Kestra. The previous paragraph is really the first time I've ranted about my conditions in weeks. I've been sick for several days now... similar symptoms. I wish you the best.

Lots of sleep.
Lots (megadoses) of Vit C
Lots of food.

Doesn't prevent a cold, but shortens it significantly.

Work for me. And even f it didn't, wouldn't be bad to do. :)

I'm home sick today for the second day in a row. I feel terrible, and the guilt about not being at work doesn't help.

:(

I hope you feel better soon, Kestra!

There's no magic cure but the basics will help shorten it somewhat. Lots of rest. Lots of water. Trying using a humidifier if you haven't. Those are really effective.

Don't worry about vitamin C. People recommend large doses but that's a waste. There's no evidence that it helps and they pretty much nailed that one shut decades ago. Just get a normal amount. Additionally, large doses just get eliminated from your body because you have no ability to store excess amounts.

Kestra & Digits, hope you're both feeling a bit better today.

I've seriously noticed a HUGE improvement in my immune system since i started exercising and eating better, mainly adding LOTS of fruit and vegetables to my diet. AND i've become not-quite-obsessive-but-almost-there when it comes to washing my hands a LOT (especially after coming home from the stupormarket or where ever). I can't even remember the last time i had a cold, even when the husband or daughter has been home sick with one.

Threads like this make me so thankful I was born with a strong immune system. I feel bad for those of you who get sick so easily. It sounds really shitty. :(

I feel for ya Kestra. I just got over a nasty case of the stomach flu myself.

Being sick stinks.

Sorry your sick. My not asked for advice, after a cold starts in try some zinc tablets they've worked on shortening the ones I do get.

For preventative measures my family has starting taking Vit D supplements once the summer sun is no longer available. We had the easiest cold and flu season ever last year.

Get well soon, Kestra! Sometimes, some complaining followed by bags of sympathy is just what the doc ordered.

Digits, sorry you're ill, but for god's sake man, do not waste your time off feeling guilty! Last time I felt under the weather, it was back to back Columbo and plenty of dark chocolate. I may have made myself more ill then before, but what the hell!

Oh no, I didn't mean to be looking for sympathy! I actually gave myself a mental kick in the ass yesterday because I was sitting there feeling bad for myself, and then I thought about my friend's dad who is dying of cancer. Perspective.

I'm like Digits, where I feel guilty and unproductive. I'm missing out on extra credit attendance points in class! Plus the worst part is, I'm sitting here on my ass and I don't even have enough concentration to be studying. I just feel lazy.

Thanks for all the good wishes everyone! I'll try to be slightly less cranky with myself. :p

All we can be is who we are. I hope you feel better soon, Kestra.
You too, Digits. Don't go spilling ones and zeroes all over the place. ;)
